Palaeognathae là một trong hai phân thứ lớp chim còn tồn tại, nhánh còn lại là Phân thứ lớp Chim hàm mới (Neognathae). Palaeognathae bao gồm năm nhánh còn tồn tại gồm các loài không biết bay (cộng với hai nhánh tuyệt chủng), và một nhánh biết bay (Tinamidae).[1][2] Phân thứ lớp này hiện bao gồm 47 loài.[3] Nghiên cứu gần đây đã chỉ ra rằng Palaeognathae là một nhánh đơn ngành, Vậy nên cách phân chia phân loại truyền thống gồm các loài không biết bay và biết bay là không chính xác.[4]
