The school's predecessor was built in 1907 and was originally named "Shuntian Middle School." In 1949, it was renamed "Beijing No. 4 High School." In 2005, it merged with Beihai Secondary School and resumed junior high school enrollment. In 2008, some teachers from Ethnicity Unity Secondary School were merged into the school. The school merged with Beijing No. 63 Secondary School in 2015. It currently has four campuses: high school, junior high school, Guangzhou Guangwai campus, and Fuxingmen international campus.[2][3]

The school consistently ranks at the top of Chinese high schools. In a 2016 ranking of Chinese high schools that send students to study in American universities, the school ranked number 1 in mainland China in terms of the number of students entering top American universities.[4][5]
