Established in 1944, it is a member of the Fourth International Posadist. In 1971 it took part in the establishment of the Broad Front. It advocated for the formation of a nuclear weapons program despite the fact that Uruguay had signed the Treaty on Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in July 1968, which effectively banned nuclear power in Uruguay. The party's leader Thiago De Los Santos claimed the treaty suppressed the "last communist revolution which is nuclear bombing".
