MICHIGAN, LAKE, one of the greatfresh-water lakes between the UnitedStates and Canada, being the secondlargest lake in the world. Lake Superiorbeing the largest. Unlike the other fourbig lakes, it lies wholly within UnitedStates territory. It is 320 miles long andaverages 76 miles in width. Its surfaceis 581 feet above sea-level.
