Sammo Hung oli nuoruudessaan Jackie Chanin ja Yuen Biaon koulutoveri kiinalaisessa ooppera-akatemiassa. Jackie ja Yuen olivat Sammoa nuorempia, joten he pitivät Sammoa "isoveljenään", vaikka Sammo piti kovaa kuria akatemiassa.
Valmistuttuaan akatemiasta Sammo siirtyi stuntmieheksi, koska kiinalaisen oopperan suosio oli laskussa. Sammo on uransa aikana näytellyt yli 150 elokuvassa, ja hän on myös ohjannut useita kymmeniä elokuvia.
