About Interlingua

The common linguistic heritage of Europe and of the Americas is derived from Greek and Latin. Beginning in 1924, professional linguists collected the Latin which has survived and recorded it in the Interlingua-English Dictionary, a work published by the International Auxiliary Language Association in 1951.

The result is called Interlingua. Its grammar has been simplified to the greatest possible extent, and an educated European or American can understand a technical or scientific text in Interlingua at sight and can learn to use the language in an extremely short time. This benefit gives it a major advantage over other international languages such as Esperanto.

Its practical utility has been demonstrated as a language of summaries in scientific publications, above all in the field of medicine, and as the sole means of communication in international conferences.

For the peoples of Africa and Asia, Interlingua serves as a key to the western languages. Interlingua is in fact their common denominator.

In the teaching of languages, it provides a rapid mean of learning the international vocabulary (in Swedish secondary schools, an independent subject) and is an excellent preparation for the study of the Romance languages and a deeper appreciation of the English language.
