Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Ethnic groups

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Ethnic groups. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Ethnic groups|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
Note that there are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove links to other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Ethnic groups.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Italian Syrians

Italian Syrians (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

This isn’t really a topic here. Specifically there is nothing here to suggest that there is a current or recent community of Syrians of Italian heritage. The article discusses Romans of Syrian origins (off topic), then the arrival of Livorno Jews (should be merged into History of the Jews in Syria, and the rest is anecdote and a section copy-pasted from Italy–Syria relations to fill out the article and make it look like an actual topic. Mccapra (talk) 05:29, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have reviewed a similar page, which is Italians in Lebanon, the name is different yes, but the page literally doesn’t define anything. Most sources aren’t accessible anymore and the source I can access is the Vinivest 2011? I know this isn’t the time to compare. But, what should the page by about if not Romans of Syrian descent and the history of both countries and the arrivals of the Italian Jews to Syria? I see no reason for all this, and suggest removing it. 2001:8F8:1473:5EF2:848C:A013:291F:7463 (talk) 00:13, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Doms in Jordan

This is should rather remain a redirect to Romani diaspora#Jordan or anything related as there's nothing exactly notable about "Doms in Jordan" obviously, because since the original redirect was removed there haven't been any establishment of WP:GNG. Vanderwaalforces (talk) 09:56, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: This discussion has been included in the deletion sorting lists for the following topics: Ethnic groups, Islam, and Jordan. WCQuidditch 10:48, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. This is a weird one, where the sources make clear that that the subject passes GNG (four solid articles, including the Christian Science Monitor, specifically covering the situation of Doms in Jordan!), but the article (like Doms in Lebanon and Doms in Israel) being so short it feels like it should just be redirected to a bigger page. But in the spirit of WP:DINC, my !vote is to keep and expand/improve. Dclemens1971 (talk) 20:02, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge - this is too short to be a stand-alone article; the best solution would be to merge this with articles like Doms in Lebanon. If there isn't a new article, Dom people seems better than a redirect to Romani diaspora. Walsh90210 (talk) 20:54, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Blood purity

Blood purity (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

"Blood purity" does not occur as a term in any of the linked articles except Fictional universe of Harry Potter (the original intention of the page as first written), and Limpieza de sangre: other entries fail MOS:DABMENTION. If rewritten as an article it would require sources, which it currently doesn't have and so fails WP:V. An alternative to deletion may be to redirect to Fictional universe of Harry Potter with a hatnote to other use(s). Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 17:27, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep. Wow, this is not a topic space I want to be much involved in. As I understand disambiguation policy, there are two burdens that need to be met. Fist, there need to be at least three valid dab topics (WP:TWODABS), and second, those target articles need to make use of the disambiguated term (WP:DABMENTION). That complicates AFD somewhat, because an article that should deal with a disambiguated topic but doesn't is an editorial issue for the target article rather than strictly a deletion issue for the disambiguation page... at least in my mind. Anyway. I don't think there's any real debate that Limpieza de sangre and Fictional universe of Harry Potter are both relevant target articles for this topic. Looking exclusively at peer reviewed journal content here, because hoo boy I do not want to do general searches on this, I think it's overwhelmingly clear that racial hygiene should also be a valid dab target,[1][2][3][4] although the article at current does not make use of this term. There's also quite a bit in the literature about parallel concepts in Japanese and Korean culture, although I don't honestly even know what the applicable extant article would be for that, if any. There is at least some scholarly use of the term in the context of the blood quantum laws[5][6] although I'll admit that's somewhat less common that its use in the German, Japanese, or Korean context. I didn't look into the Australian stuff. I've searched just about enough of this for one day. Lubal (talk) 15:08, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-up to the deletion of:

  • Northwestern European Canadians
  • Northwestern European Americans
  • Northwestern European Australians
  • Northwestern European people
  • Eastern European people
  • Eastern European identity
  • East Asian identity

All written by the same user that have also been deleted for the same reasons, this similarly written article has the same problems. WP:SYNTH + WP:REFBOMBED issues where the article just references random articles with the phrase "Arab Canadian" or "Arab-Canadian (identity)" in it. NLeeuw (talk) 08:24, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The whole article is WP:OR and is making connection of any unfavorable event that occurred in or around West Bengal as discrimination against its people. Ratnahastin (talk) 09:08, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: While this might be a clear Delete, I'm seeing too much opinion and not enough policy-based arguments about this article. Let's lower the temperature and consider how this article does or doesn't abide by Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Just because discrimination happens against other groups isn't a good reason to delete this particular article. I also note that this AFD has been available for closure for other 13 hours and no admin has opted to close it which made me consider whether it needed more substantive discussion.

  • Keep I did a google scholar search for "anti-bengali discrimination india" and found a decent number of sources that seem to contribute to WP:GNG. I don't see a good reason to delete at this time.CarringtonMist (talk) 16:10, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Although there is an issue with original research, there is also a decent amount of directly-related sources. Definitely needs to be cleaned up though. Perhaps since the page has been renamed, expand its coverage to include anti-Bengali sentiment in Pakistan/Myanmar. 70.176.221.156 (talk) 01:35, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete Not denying that there is discrimination. It is just that the topic is not notable enough for a stand-alone article. Georgethedragonslayer (talk) 18:14, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Does not need a standalone article for this WP:SYNTH. Most of the content is only about the language-related issues and religiously motivated discrimination where the victim happened to be Bengali speaker. Captain AmericanBurger1775 (talk) 01:54, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep I have just done a massive (~1hr) edit on the article, stripping it of extensive OR/SYNTH and a lottttt of off-topic/unencyclopedic content. Despite the massive removals, I feel a pretty solid article remains, one that I've hopefully stripped down to the most relevant content (and thoroughly marked remaining statements in need of sources). I'm a bit scared to venture into picking/defining RSes myself, as an overly cautious editor, but given the statements from others above that more sources DO seem to exist, I hope I've paved the way for this to be an easier "keep and improve" Chiselinccc (talk) 08:56, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep It is strange because although the title is Anti-Bengali sentiment, its content is mainly about Discrimination against Bengalis in India. I didn’t searches for sources about anti-Bengali sentiment in India. But I found many sources about Discrimination against Bengalis in Pakistan (pre-1971) and we can add Pakistan section that will make the article better. Even some sources say that in present Bengali people living in Karachi, Pakistan are facing discrimination. The title is "Anti-Bengali sentiment" so by adding the Pakistan part we can keep this article. Mehedi Abedin 12:07, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - there is a fair bit of well-sourced information, and Chiselinccc's definitely puts it in keep now. Brat Forelli🦊 00:55, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do we really need a standalone WP article on each and every tribe that exists on this planet? Fails WP:GNG. —Saqib (talk I contribs) 00:32, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is a tribe of the Sindhis in the southeastern region of Pakistan. You should avoid speed nominating multiple articles without hesitation and get yourself familiarized with South Asian caste related articles. Perhaps engage in a talk page discussion first with major contributors. It got international coverage for being the first tribe in Sindh to elect a woman as its head. I'd say for that alone it is notable. Sir Calculus (talk) 05:17, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps engage in a talk page discussion first with major contributors. This tribe was involved in a rebellion against the Arghun Dynasty of Sindh. • Comment - I know nothing about this although I am confused about the content of the page. First Samma (tribe) is said to be a clan, then Sameja (clan) is said to be a clan and then on the page there are clans (or subclans?). It is unclear to me how many of the sources on the page are actually substantially discussing the topic. Second, there are wp pages in other languages for Samma (tribe) but none have one for Sameja (clan). It strikes me that unless someone can show a source which goes into depth then we should maybe follow the lead of the other WP language versions. JMWt (talk) 09:05, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Draftify and merge region wise all similar articles after RfC @ WT:PAK:
Though I would share main concern. I suppose it needs deeper collective thought. I do not see any WP:RFCBEFORE to have taken place at Talk:Abro (tribe) or rather better would have been at WT:PAK.
Likelihood of similar articles in 100s?
Category:Sindhi tribes likely to have more than 250 similar stubs. The way articles seem to have formed I can imagine similar would be the case for many in Category:Tribes of Pakistan. Though there is one central article Ethnic groups of Pakistan it's scope does not seem to be tribal specific.
Importance of topic and issue
I am surprised region wise central articles for tribes of Pakistan do not exist but such large number of stubs going no where seem to exist. Baradari (brotherhood) system is influential cultural part of Pakistan and that article too is a stub. Tribal and ethnicity antecedents form clan culture / Baradari (brotherhood) so anthropologically it's important core of Pakistan's demographic history. Though not paid enough attention to on WP.
Idk if any similar articles were listed and deleted up til now but my suggestion is Draftify and merge region wise all similar articles after RfC @ WT:PAK. If no one is ready to work on the drafts then put in my user name space I shall try to promote for expansion in due course. Bookku (talk) 05:44, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Is it really possible to merge all region wise articles? There are many which may not be suitable for a single list-like descriptive article publishing. Jadeja, Kalhora, Soomro, Jokhio, Bhutto, Burfat are some examples. Sir Calculus (talk) 12:24, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well developed ones need not be merged. Even for region list may be long but it can be further divided tribal district wise because many tribes are likely to be concentrated in few districts only. May be you can have separate article for extinct tribes. End of the day AfD is would not be right venue to take a detail call but project notice board would be IMO.
