Kemerovo (Roushie: Кемерово) is an industrial ceety an the admeenistrative centre o Kemerovo Oblast, Roushie, locatit on the Tom River, east-northeast o Novosibirsk, in the major coal minin region o the Kuznetsk Basin. Kemerovo is an amalgamation o, an successor tae, several aulder Roushie dounsets. A weypoint namit Verkhotomsky ostrog wis establisht nearbi in 1657 on a road frae Tomsk tae Kuznetsk fortress. In 1701, the dounset o Shcheglovo wis foondit on the left bank o the Tom; suin it became a veelage. Bi 1859, seiven veelages existit whaur modren Kemerovo is nou: Shcheglovka (or Ust-Iskitimskoye), Kemerovo (namit in 1734), Yevseyevo, Krasny Yar, Kur-Iskitim (Pleshki), Davydovo (Ishanovo), an Borovaya. In 1721, coal wis discovered in the area. The first coal mines wur establisht in 1907, later a chemical plant wis establisht in 1916.
