• Translating templates, policies, helps and other Wikipedia’s documents is a daunting task. Most of us working on this project are Vietnamese from overseas. Our Vietnamese is either rusty or immature in term of vocabulary and grammar. Even while we are trying very hard, it wouldn’t be complete and perfect if we don’t get help from people in Vietnam. We should do something to get them involved on this.

Anyone else getting the English interface instead of the Vietnamese one when they're logged out? DHN 23:23, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I'm not. Of course, there are some things that haven't been translated into Vietnamese yet, that you will see once logging out, but I don't see a completely English interface. – Minh Nguyễn 02:34, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)

UniKey input

Am I alone in thinking that it would be nice to enable Unicode inputs right at the edit box instead of relying on third-party software? This makes sure that everyone uses the same encoding instead of their own which might not display correctly on other computers. I had the same problem when translating the Google interface into Vietnamese. VietJie can be easily integrated into the edit page. I believe it is GPL'd, but I'm not sure. This might be too much, but I think instructions and links here should be in Vietnamese to make it more accessible to people who do not speak English 128.195.100.178 15:02, 12 Nov 2003 (UTC)

UniKey http://unikey.sourceforge.net/ is Free and opensource and also used by the ISOC Vietnam. Joakim Löfkvist 20:26, 12 Nov 2003 (UTC)
I use UniKey to do my inputting as well, but my point is that users shouldn't have to download third party software to do the editing. I sometimes edit these sites away from my computer, so I don't have those tools available. 128.195.15.118 21:48, 12 Nov 2003 (UTC)
If you know how to do that or ask someone it is OK with me. Joakim Löfkvist 09:11, 16 Nov 2003 (UTC)
All the edit pages at the Spanish Wikipedia have a line below the edit box that contains all the characters that can't be inserted using the keyboard, so that users can copy and paste them. Here's an example. - Minh Nguyễn, 18:40:16, 25 November 2003 (UTC-5)
That's an inelegant solution. Try typing Vietnamese into the Nom lookup tool text box to see what I mean. 128.195.100.178 03:35, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Of course. But it's probably the easiest. I'd actually like to see a little text box below the edit box where you can type VIQR into and it would "translate" it into Unicode and insert it into the edit box where you had the cursor. I'll try to come up with some JavaScript for it. - Minh Nguyễn, 15:46:54, 26 November 2003 (UTC-5)
Check out the link in the first post in this topic. 128.195.100.178 22:55, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)
I just realized that if you download and install Từ Điển Tiếng Việt on your own computer, you can type stuff into the Word field using VIQR and other inputting methods, and it'll automatically turn the letters into precomposed Unicode! (VietJie has't worked for me on Mozilla, so this is a nice solution for me.) – Minh Nguyễn 19:24, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Orthography

HiI strongly agree with you to « Vietnamize » these names and place. But with these worlds in English, for example, Canada is already a word in Vietnamese now and “Gia-nã-đại”, actually, is transcribed phonetically from China. In fact, words like Hoa Thịnh Đốn (Washington), Á-căn-đình (Argentina) are the same way and almost being not existence. So people might have mistake with these. Thus, I appreciate the suggestion that we keep their original form in phonetic English (But we still have exceptions).

I think it's better to leave foreign names in their original form, unless the names are Vietnamized (i.e. follow correct Vietnamese spelling rules, are real Vietnamese words, and most Vietnamese speakers would understand what they refer to). Variant spellings should redirect to the main spelling instead. -Nguyễn Hữu Dụng 128.195.100.178 00:37, 13 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Every Vietnamese-speaker I know of (I guess that's not saying much, as I live in the American Midwest) considers Ca Li the Vietnamese translation of California, and I know of one old song in Vietnamese that repeatedly refers to California as Ca Li. I'll see if I can find it. But I'll keep it California for now. - Minh Nguyễn, 21:54:18, 12 November 2003 (UTC-5)
I think that everything should be in Vietnamese. The English word could you read about at the English Wikipedia. I should try to make any of my Vietnamese friends in Vietnam to join. Joakim Löfkvist 18:44, 13 Nov 2003 (UTC)
I'm refering to naming convention of articles. Some new foreign names have no Vietnamese equivalent terms. In the past, people have tried to Vietnamize them (Scarlet O'Hara->Xcalét Aôherơ) but recently the trends have been to leave them in their original forms. I think that this method is better since it has only one standard spelling and everyone knows exactly what you're talking about. Of course, there are always exceptions, in this case terms that Vietnamized through Chinese are acceptable (i.e. Washington->Hoa Thịnh Đốn, New York->Nữu Ước, Canada->Gia Nã Đại, etc.) since they are accepted into the language for a long time. See naming conventions for more info. Nguyễn Hữu Dụng 128.195.100.178 04:39, 14 Nov 2003 (UTC)

But doesn't bạn mean friend? (I asked because I wasn't sure exactly how to translate you without assuming the gender or relation of someone.) - Minh Nguyễn, 16:50:02, 16 November 2003 (UTC-5)
Correct. Vietnamese has so many pronouns that it's hard to list them all. Bạn is the most gender-neutral and relation-neutral term I can think of. Some other gender-neutral terms that also means "you" include: ngươi & mày (extremely rude unless you're speaking to a subordinate or a someone you're extremely close to) and quý vị (too rigid and formal). Bạn expresses friendliness and a degree of informality without being rude. Nguyễn Hữu Dụng 128.195.100.178 00:00, 17 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Wiki templates

Is it proper to "predesign" some of the pages such as years, coyntries and so on in order to make them look the same. Joakim Löfkvist 09:11, 16 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Well, we can just transfer all the countries, etc. in the English Wikipedia to this one first, and then translate them. Some articles (Việt Nam, Lào, Thụy Điển) have already been created that way. - Minh Nguyễn, 16:54:09, 16 November 2003 (UTC-5)
Yeah, certain templates are necessary, like w:Wikipedia:Wikiproject in English Wikipedia. There are also some Wikiprojects in Chinese version which are almost adopted from English ones. Vietnamese wiki can do the same. Something like Wikiproject:Country, province, chemical element etc. --Samuel 03:46, 17 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Translating 'Wikipedia'

Wikipedia Raster Name lists the name "Wikipedia" in many of the languages available here. Any thoughts on how we could "Vietnamize" it, not that it would necessarily be used at this Wikipedia? (Btw, a lot of the languages just kept it "Wikipedia"; we could do the same if we really want to, but I was just curious to know how it could be "Vietnamized." - Minh Nguyễn, 20:14:13, 20 November 2003 (UTC-5)

Most localized Wikipedia names are just sounded out in the only possible native pronunciation. Like some European languages had no W, so it used V. Chinese had no KI, so we used JI. And the second part, "-pedia" could be how one says it in the local tongue. --Menchi 10:35, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Vietnamese's translation of "encyclopedia" (sách bách khoa) isn't one word – well, it contains spaces. So I don't think that'd be an option. But maybe transliterating it to follow Vietnamese spelling words would work. - Minh Nguyễn, 16:40:20, 22 November 2003 (UTC-5)
transliteration will be better (that's what Chinese version did, "wiki"->"weiji"). Can't vietnamese be written without space? BTW, Vietnamese wiki renews so fast, i just meant to add wikisource to the main page, and found it has already there! :) --Samuel 10:24, 26 Nov 2003 (UTC)
There is a small movement to get rid of spaces between syllables in Vietnamese, but we probably shouldn't do that here. - Minh Nguyễn 14:41, 2 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I think the compressed style is actually a good idea. Let's see: encyclopedia = báchkhoatừđiển; (or even lazier) = bachkhoatudien (this looks the best). Now try: wikipedia = wikibáchkhoa or wikibachkhoa. No problems! Who knows this is where the New Vietnamese writing style makes its breakthrough! This method of "dropping diacritics whenever unambiguous" is well practiced in the Hebrew language--it even goes further to "dropping vowels whenever unambiguous"! - Vuara Trần 14:55, 18 Dec 2003 (CST)
Vietnamese doesn't have portmanteaus (like the name Wikipedia or the word smog) in the same way that most Western languages do. Because Vietnamese (at least in the mainstream) retains the practice of separating each syllable by a space, portanteaus are just combinations of smaller words that usually don't go together. I made one up (I think) the other day: liên tiếng (interlanguage). I hope it makes sense. – Minh Nguyễn 02:00, 19 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I oppose removing spaces between syllables. Vietnamese is largely a monosyllabic language, and in polysyllabic words, the syllables are clearly defined. Anyone who learned the rules of Vietnamese pronunciation will be able to read Vietnamese text without needing to learn exceptions. I don't see why they want to fix something that's not broken. Mushing syllables together will make it much harder to read. DHN 02:46, 19 Dec 2003 (UTC)
How about Vikibéđia? A little justification:
 • Vietnamese doesn't have the "w", so I went with "v".
 • Vietnamese doesn't use "p" by itself (not as "ph"), so I went with "b" – a common transliteration.
 • The third syllable is stressed in the English version, so I gave it the acute mark (dấu sắt).
 • Vietnamese makes the English "d" sound with "đ".
I'm open to suggestions. :) – Minh Nguyễn 03:40, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I know this is an old conversation, but I've figured out how to do a Chinese-based transliteration of "Wikipedia":

 1. I first took the Chinese translation, 维基百科.
 2. Then I used the Unicode Code Converter to figure out the Unicode codes for each character.
 3. Next I used the Unihan Database to browse that database's ton of information regarding every CJK character. I used these pages: 7EF4 57FA 767E 79D1.
 4. At the bottom of the page, there's a section called Other Data. For all but the first character, there's an entry kVietnamese there. That's what I'm using for each word in "Wikipedia."
 5. For the first character, there is no Vietnamese transliteration. So I looked under the Phonetic Data section, which provides a pronunciation guide for two dialects of Chinese: Cantonese and Mandarin. I used the Cantonese one, WAI4.
 6. en:Pinyin says that the 4 tone is the same as dấu huyền in Vietnamese. So wai4 would transliterate to hoài.

So my newest transliteration is (drumroll please): Hoài cơ bách khoa. Surprise, there's bách khoa in there again. But I figure that's a bit too long to fit in the logo, so I guess we'll stick with "Wikipedia." Besides, it helps with name recognition: this Wikipedia has been promoted on the Internet already. – Minh Nguyễn (thảo luận, blog) 03:15, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)

“維” is “duy” in Vietnamese. I thought that you have tried to search “维” (simplified Chinese) with no result. Right? --zh:User:Sl

New User Interface

Hey, guys, the MediaWiki has been setup, you can localize this wiki by editing MediaWiki:XXXX. Go to MediaWiki namespace && Wikipedia:MediaWiki namespace and read more about that, I am sure you would be interested in that!(but it would take a lot of time to translate all MediaWiki. :) just like what Shizhao did in Chinese WP). This function is limited to sysop only, do protect them after editing to avoid vandalism! :) after all, the current Vietnamese-English mixed user interface scares newies! :) enjoy (Sorry that I could not find where "Village pump" is in Vietnamese Wikipedia, so I just left my message here! Hope don't mind!) --Samuel 06:48, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

If you want to change "Log out" (below the user's name) to "Đăng xuất", just edit MediaWiki:Logout. (I can't edit that page because I am not sysop!) and so on. Hope I can see all messages be changed into Vietnamese next time I come here (which means I will not be able to read a word at all next time :-( ) --Samuel 07:02, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Spelling, từ tiếng Việt

Hi ! I think "Lịch sử", and not "Lịch sữ" !? (this word is everywhere in our WP) (Từ điển tiếng Việt của Viện ngôn ngữ Việt Nam - trong nước - cũng ghi là "Lịch sử" với dấu hỏi)

Đúng rồi! Mình viết sai, xin sửa giùm :-) DHN 22:51, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Note to editors: "Sữ" (history), used many times in many articles, is misspelled. If you catch any, please change it to "sử" DHN 22:59, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Tựa đề "Canh chừng trang này" (watching this page) nghe không được "thuận tai" lắm (mình thật sự không hiểu khi mới đọc vào !), có thể dịch lại là "Theo dõi trang này" và "Ngừng theo dõi trang này" được không ? (QMCD 21:22, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC))

Hay đó, "theo dõi" nghe hay hơn, mình sẽ sửa đổi liền. Cảm ơn.DHN 22:51, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I thought I used "thảo luận," not "nói" DHN 22:51, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Tập tin:Wiki-vi.png

I've translated the subtitle of Nohat's logo into Vietnamese for this Wikipedia.

I used the font Thryomanes, because it is very similar to the font used in the original logo (with the curled h and all), and because it has precomposed Vietnamese glyphs. The image doesn't have transparency, because I don't have software that'll export to PNG with transparency – I used Microsoft Publisher (for adding the text and doing extensive kerning), Microsoft Paint (for touch-up), and Adobe PhotoDeluxe (for converting the file to PNG) to make the image.

I've already submitted this to Brion's TODO list, but if someone can add in transparency for me and upload the modified image, that'd be great. Thanks. – Minh Nguyễn 03:46, 13 Dec 2003 (UTC)

If you haven't already noticed, Brion's already added in transparency and made the revised image the logo for the Vietnamese Wikipedia. Thanks, Brion! – Minh Nguyễn 03:17, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hi, I just want to contribute to develop Wikipedia in Vietnamese. I think I can help to edit some of the Vietnames languages on this page. First about the logo, can you please change this logo to " Bách Khoa miễn phí " because the word "free" in this case means " miễn phí" instead of "tự do"Quốc Nguyên Lý

First of all, welcome to the Vietnamese Wikipedia. Feel free to help out.

Now, the use of tự do was proposed by DHN (see Wikipedia:Thảo Luận). Though I'm definitely not an expert, I'd like to stick to tự do, because not only is this site free to use, but it also allows quite a bit of freedom. We can edit articles freely, for example. But we can hold a vote here if you'd like. – Minh Nguyễn (thảo luận, blog) 01:52, 27 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Khoá

In my opinion, the English Wikipedia's idea of "protecting" a page is really locking it. So I'd like to change all mention of bảo vệ to khoá (which means "to lock"). Objections? – Minh Nguyễn 01:49, 21 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Nohat, an English Wikipedia user, has created a much better Vietnamese version of the Wikipedia logo.

English Wikipedia user Nohat has created a rather nice Vietnamese translation for the Wikipedia logo, as part of his Logo WikiProject. The subtitle looks a lot better than the version I came up with, so I think Nohat's logo should replace mine. Thoughts? (Brion Vibber has stopped accepting additions to his ToDo list, so I can't really request the change there right now.)

First of all, Wikipedia isn't just free of charge; it's also free in the sense that you can do a lot here without approval. You can edit articles on your own, and you don't need someone to review your changes first. That's why Nguyễn Hữu Dụng translated "the free encyclopedia" as "bách khoa tự do." (And we also had to make the motto short enough to fit in the logo.)
Second of all, the term tổng thống has been used here alot. If you have a problem with that, though, you're free to change it. – Minh Nguyễn (thảo luận, blog) 17:16, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for publicizing this project. That's actually one of the steps to starting a Wikipedia, but I wasn't confident about doing that myself. I think I got the gist of the article you wrote. About the logo: the Wikimedia community at-large has decided that "free" in "the free encyclopedia" should mean "freedom", not "free of charge" (see m:How to start a new Wikipedia#Translate the interface). So translating our motto as Bách khoa tự do was intentional. (Actually Nguyễn Hữu Dụng, another sysop here, came up with the translation. He's a native Vietnamese speaker, so I trust him on that translation.)

Audio template

Hi, I am making audio recordings of the pronunciation of words. Example; Media:Nl-be guy verhofstadt.ogg To include this in a good way in your wiki I need to know what your audio template is and how it works. When I know it i, and many others, can put it directly inside articles on your wikipedia.

Can some one please put your audio template on this page;

Greetings, nl:gebruiker:Walter

You can find it here.

Currently, we don't have a Speedy Deletion process (we just delete if necessary), so it won't make sense for us to have a template for that yet. – Nguyễn Minh (thảo luận, blog) 01:23, 18 tháng 4 2005 (UTC)
