Draft:Bhai Jai Singh Khalkat

Bhai Jai Singh Khalkat (often referred to as Baba Jai Singh Khalkat Ji) is a Sikh martyr.

Early life

Khalkat was born to a Sikh devotee family in the village Mughal Majra,[1] which was settled on Sirhind Patiala Road. His father was a devotee of Guru Gobind Singh and was baptised by him. During his childhood, Bhai Jai Singh would visit Ananpur Sahib along with his father and was later baptised there .[2]

Death

Khalkat was skinned alive by the Mugal army on the orders of Pathan Abd-us Samad Khan,[3] the Governor of Sirhind, for not following his order to carry a hookah (a smoking pipe with tobacco), which is prohibited for baptised Sikhs. His wife, Dhan Kaur, both of his sons, Karraka Singh and Kharrak Singh, and his younger daughter-in-law, Amar Kaur, were martyred along with him.

His eldest son's pregnant wife escaped and gave birth to his son in Ambala, who carried the legacy of Jai Singh Khalkat and his family's sacrifice.[4]
