Grand Cadaver is a Swedish death metal supergroup fromed in 2020, with members from Gothenburg, Stockholm and Falun.[1] The band has released two full-length albums, one EP and several singles. The group consists of Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity, The Halo Effect), Christian Jansson (Dark Tranquillity, Pagandom)[2], Stefan Lagegren (The Gridfted, ex-Tiamat/Treblinka)[3], Daniel Liljekvist (Ikhon, Vorder, ex-Katatonia)[4] and Alex Stjernfeldt (Novarupta, CHILD, Young Acid, ex-The Moth Gatherer, ex-Let them Hang)[5].

History

The band formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020[6] when Alex Stjernfeldt and Daniel Liljekvist decided to start an old-school death metal band, and invited Alex's old band colleagues Stefan Lagergren and Christian Jansson, as well as his neighbour Mikael Stanne.[7] For them, the band was a way to return to the rehearsal room, drinking beer, and creating the death metal music they grew up on.[8]

The five members met for the first time at Welfare Sounds recording studio in Gothenburg, Sweden, to begin recording the EP "Madness Comes", which they completed over a weekend.[7] Initially the band only planned to release an EP as a side project during the COVID-19 pandemic when all tours were on hold, with no intention of producing a full-length album.[9]

During an interview, the band publicly stated that they ought to record a full-length album, since the EP had been so well received and the members enjoyed the easy-going recording process. "Into The Maw of Death", the debut album, was recorded in mere six days. The album was awarded "Best Metal" at the 2022 Manifest awards.[10]

Grand Cadaver's first live appearance took place in Gothenburg on 15 October 2021[11], during Suicide Records festival "15 Years of Mayhem"[12][13], followed by a tour with At The Gates later the same year.[14]

When the COVID-19 pandemic subsided, and the member's full time bands were again touring, the recording pace was slowed (both the EP and debut album were recorded the same year), but the band managed to write and record the follow-up album "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" in 2022.[15] The band said that this album was conceived and recorded with the same mindset and the same team as their previous recordings, keeping it quick, spontaneous and enjoyable, and this time it turned out a bit more dynamic, with the pummeling fury interspersed with some doom, gloom and darkness.[9] The B-side of the "Reign Through Fire" single is written as a celebration of Lars-Göran Petrov and his years of service to death metal.[16]

In 2024 they performed their first show outside Scandinavia, at the "Dark Easter Metal Meeting" in Germany.[7][17]

They participated in the compilation album Suicide Record "In the Loving Memory of You" along with 15 more bands (Skitsystem, Knivad, Demonic Death Judge, M:40, Downfall Of Gaia, The Moth Gatherer, Fredag den 13:e, Besvärjelsen, Novarupta, Fabian Brusk Jahn, Rainbird, Ulmus, Division of Laura Lee, GUHTS, and Firebreather). This initiative of Suicide Records founder, Roger Andersson, intends to "respectfully reflect the emotions that arise when someone close chooses to end their life". All proceeds from the album will to to the Swedish suicide-prevention non-profit organisation, Suicide Zero [18]
