Kim Hyun-jin was born on November 15, 2000, in Dunchon-dong, Gangdong District, Seoul, South Korea. She has two older brothers, one is a vocalist for the band 'BI-O-NE'[2], and one is an actor[3] She graduated from Hansung Girls High School in 2019.[4]

In 2013, when she was thirteen years old, HyunJin appeared on the 40th episode of 'Three Idiots', a Korean reality TV show. She was introduced as a natural beauty, and demonstrated her skills in skipping rope[5]

Career

2016–2022: Traineeship and Debut with Loona

HyunJin was scouted by Polaris Entertainment after her appearance on Three Idiots and became a trainee in 2013. She later transferred to BlockBerry Creative (often shortened to BBC) to take part in the LOONA Project early 2016, and was eventually chosen as the second member of LOONA. HyunJin accompanied HeeJin during the latter’s trip to Paris for filming[6].

On October 23, 2016, the first “Who’s Next Girl?” teaser was posted by BlockBerry Creative, and HyunJin was fully revealed as the next member of Loona on October 28. She released her solo single album HyunJin on November 17, 2016 and debuted as a member of Loona.[7]

Hyunjin's single contains title track Around You, and dual-title track I'll Be There. Around you was released with its own music video, which was filmed in Tokyo, and also includes an 8 minute flim version. I'll Be There also has a music video, which introduces HyunJin and HeeJin together (in the 'Loonaverse'). This music video was filmed in Harajuku, Tokyo.[8]

2017: Mix Nine, Loona 1/3

On January 12, 2017, a collaboration with fellow Loona member Heejin was teased. The song, My Sunday, was released 4 days later with its own music video, and was included in the single album Yeojin.[9]

In October 2017, HyunJin, as well as fellow Loona members HeeJin and HaSeul, auditioned for the survival reality show Mix Nine. Hyunjin passed the audition and became a contestant as a representative of BBC and Loona[10]. She made it to the final episode, but was eliminated and did not make the final lineup.[11][12]

HyunJin was revealed to be a member of Loona's first sub-unit, Loona 1/3, on February 14, 2017.[13]

2018: Debut in Loona

On August 20, 2018, HyunJin officially debuted as a member of the completed group Loona, with the other 11 members. Loona released a mini album [++], along with the title track Hi High.

2022: Dating rumors

On July 11, 2022, celebrity news YouTube channel Sojang posted a video claiming that HyunJin was dating rapper A–FLOW, which stirred up controversy as he is 23 years older than her[14]. BlockBerryCreative denied the rumors and said they will take a strong legal response to the rumors from YouTube.[15]

On February 3, 2023, HyunJin and fellow Loona member ViVi filed lawsuits to terminate their contracts with their company BlockBerryCreative.[16]

On May 9, 2023, HyunJin and ViVi won their injunctions against BlockBerryCreative and terminated their exclusive contracts.[17]

On June 12, 2023, HyunJin and ViVi officialy signed with CTDE&M, a newly formed company founded by Yoon Doyeon, BlockBerryCreative’s former planning division director.[18][19]

On November 17, 2023, rumors spread on X that HyunJin and Wooyoung from ATEEZ were dating. An anonymous user discovered that Wooyoung’s profile picture on his alleged alternate Instagram account showed two cats, one of which resembled Hyunjin's cat Paldo.
