The Langston Boulevard–McPherson Square Line, designated Routes 3F and 3Y, is a weekday only bus route operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority between East Falls Church station of the Orange and Silver Lines of the Washington Metro and McPherson Square station of the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines of the Washington Metro.

The line operates roughly every 25-60 minutes at all times. Trips take roughly 20 minutes on route 3F and 45-60 minutes on route 3Y.

Background

The Langston Boulevard–McPherson Square Line one of the most underused route, only serving 186 riders on weekdays.[1] The line operates out of the Four Mile Run division.

Route 3Y provides service in Rosslyn via Langston Boulevard before entering Washington, D.C.. Route 3F provides a somewhat Limited-stop service in Washington, D.C. before entering Arlington. However, the 3F doesn't provide service along Langston Boulevard or Rosslyn but instead goes straight to East Falls Church station upon leaving Washington, D.C.

History

DirectLee to DC

In 2004, WMATA announced that new route 3Y would enter service as the Lee Highway–Farragut Square Line, operating between the Lee Heights/Waverly Hills area and McPherson Square via North Woodrow Street, turn right onto Lee Highway, continue along I-66 and The Theodore Roosevelt Bridge, E Street Expressway, E Street, turning left onto 18th Street, right onto K Street, right onto 14th Street to the terminal stand on the west side of 14th Street, south of I (Eye) Street.[2]

Service changes

On December 13, 2015, the route was extended to East Falls Church station. Service along North George Mason Drive, Patrick Henry Drive and North Harrison Street was discontinued and is now provided by ART 51.[3]

After a suspension,[4] Route 3Y service was restored between Farragut Square and Lee Highway & North George Mason Drive. However, service to East Falls Church was fully eliminated. In addition, the route was changed to begin northbound on 13th & H streets NW and operate along I (Eye) Street NW. Service would no longer operate along 15th & K streets NW.[5]

On December 17, 2021 service was re-extended to East Falls Church station. On the same day, Route 3F began service, operating between Farragut Square and East Falls Church.[6]

Due to weight restrictions,[7] on May 29, 2022, the line was rerouted off of Roosevelt Bridge. Eastbound trips used the Arlington Memorial Bridge, eliminating service on E Street NW & 20 Street NW and westbound trips used the Whitehurst Freeway and Key Bridge. Due to the renaming of Langston Boulevard from Lee Highway, the Line was renamed to its current name, the "Langston Boulevard–McPherson Square Line."[8][9]

On December 17, 2023, the eastbound route was changed. The route was changed to serve K, 11th, G, and 13th streets NW for operational safety. Buses now no longer turn from eastbound K Street to southbound 14th Street NW across the K Street service road.[10]

Proposed elimination

In WMATA's FY2025 proposed budget, they proposed to eliminate routes 3Y and 3F. Alternative service would be provided by ART Route 55 and the Washington Metro's Orange and Silver Lines.[11][12]
