Summary

Description

The Manchester Sperm Whale, mounted and suspended from the ceiling of the great hall of Manchester Museum in 1898 by Harry Ferris Brazenor (1863–1948). This 11-metre juvenile was beached in 1896 in Massachusetts and taken to Rochester, New York. It was transported to the museum's director William Evans Hoyle in three crates, via the Manchester Ship Canal. It took Brazenor three weeks to assemble and hang it - and there it remains, as an icon of the museum.
