English: Eighteen young Marines stand atop Mt. Suribachi, Feb. 23, 1945, for a photo taken by Joe Rosenthal. The picture became known as the “Gung Ho” photo. Thurman is standing on the far left with his helmet in the air behind Cpl. Ira Hayes. The "18th man" is Harlon Block, who is unlabeled; Block stands directly behind Sgt. Henry Hansen, and only the top of his head and hairline is visible.
