Makarovsky District (Russian: Мака́ровский райо́н) is an administrative district (raion) of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia; one of the seventeen in the oblast.[1] Municipally, it is incorporated as Makarovsky Urban Okrug.[5] It is located in the southeast of the Island of Sakhalin. The area of the district is 2,148.4 square kilometers (829.5 sq mi).[2] Its administrative center is the town of Makarov.[1] Population: 8,579 (2010 Russian census);[3] 9,774 (2002 Census);[7] 14,993 (1989 Soviet census).[8] The population of Makarov accounts for 78.2% of the district's total population.[3]
