Its actually in between - mainly journalistic exaggeration. According to the statistics the last time winter was colder was 1969 - 39 years ago. I shall insert this in the article--AssegaiAli (talk) 21:32, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I think this article deserves a place in the news, not just DYK. Abnormally harsh winters have been causing havoc not just in Central Asia but China as well. I believe these are related and definitely deserves much more attention than it is currently receiving. Occational cold or hot weather has nothing to do with global warming. Of course they are related, all weather is related. Please clarify the statement about saxaul as a "rare plant at risk of extinction". It seems difficult to picture a rare plant as a major source of energy, and the linked article states that the plant is for example being used in widespread afforestation campaigns in China. The IUCN Red List didn't give me any results, common or rare, for saxaul or Haloxylon of any variety. Information on the Web suggests that saxaul is the basis of an important ecosystem and is being drastically reduced by human activity.[1] I suspect you actually mean to say that it's an important plant that, although common, is needed as an environment for other species, but perhaps there is some rare species or population at risk of extinction? I added a current event tag, but only because I did not know if there was an out-of-date tag. an update tag. This article is severely out of date and needs to be updated, rewritten, or deleted. If someone knows a more appropriate tag, please change the one I added. I am sorry that I am quite unfamiliar with this topic and am unqualified to make the changes to the article myself.
