Link with Netanyahu

Until I changed it just now, the article claimed that Patterson was the "namesake" of Jonathan Netanyahu and that he was Netanyahu's godfather. The second of these claims was based on something from a Benjamin Netanyahu interview here: "Prime Minister Netanyahu told us he regarded Patterson as godfather to the Israeli Army as well as the godfather to his brother". Somebody misunderstood this figurative statement as Patterson literally being Jonathan Netanyahu's godfather, but of course there are no godparents in Judaism.

I have altered the wording to say "according to Benjamin Netanyahu" Jonathan was named after Patterson, as they were not actually namesakes. "John" and "Jonathan" are not the same name and this is particularly obvious in the original Hebrew. John is "Yochanan" (יוחנן) and Jonathan is "Yonatan" (יונתן). Benzion Netanyahu was a prominent Judaic scholar and would surely have been aware of this. (Jonathan was probably chosen as opposed to John as it is regarded as a more "Jewish" name.) —  Cliftonian (talk)  09:09, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

I too had been uncomfortable with "godfather", thinking it a Christian term, but Benjamin Netanyahu does use the term of Patterson and he inscribed the cup he gave "To my beloved godson Yonatan ...". Also see this - Godparent#Judaism.

Thanks for finding the sourcing for this and clearing it up—seems to have been an ad hoc thing between friends. Makes sense now. Cheers! :) —  Cliftonian (talk)  15:09, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
