This is a fine piece of work! I think that you did a really nice job of providing good documentation and extensive references. (You'll see that I've changed the formatting of footnotes to make the text a bit easier to follow.) I added subheadings and shifted a few paragraphs around to create a more clear structure to the entry. Hopefully, these will provide some ideas for you and others to use as the entry grows over time. It would be nice to make this entry more comprehensive as specific pages on individual cave sites are created. I haven't yet done a thorough search, but this entry should seek to link to other entries on Maya caves and related topics. I think the references should be cleaned up with a more standard Wikipedia style, but otherwise this is very well done! Hoopes (talk) 03:32, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

As noted by other editors, this page could use a major revision. Here's an outline of problem areas:

• Wordiness: This even extends to the title (Is a "cave site" anything other than a cave?). The opening sentence ("Maya cave sites are caves...") is another offender. There are a lot of "there appears to be" and "it is possible that" statements, which raise attribution issues. Generally, the article has a redundancy problem.

• Clarification: Several passages are problematic:

"Maya cave sites attracted robbers and invaders during the war,^{[clarification needed]} so the entrances to some of them were walled up (James Brady as examples leads immured caves of Dos Pilas and Naj Tunich)."

As 95.170.106.42 noted, "the war" needs a reference. If it's mentioned elsewhere in the article, it needs to be stated explicitly. Also, "James Brady as examples leads immured" is unintelligible.

"The total number of Maya cave sites in the Puuc region of the Yucatan is estimated^{[clarification needed]} to be more than 2000, most of which are not open.^{[citation needed]} The most extensive inventory estimates the existence of about 300 caves)."

Again, this is unintelligible.

• Structure: The TOC could be tightened up; "ritual" could be grouped with "offerings", among other pairings.

Also, the article seems to easily break down into the exploration of the caves and their influence on Maya culture. (The statements regarding vandalism near the beginning could be included under Exploration). This would eliminate the need for the repetitive "Association with" syntax in the TOC headings and would make the remaining content more manageable.

• Sources: Readers who are new to the subject are not likely to familiar with James Brady as an authority in the field. Wikipedia being an encyclopedia, rather than a scholarly journal, references to Brady would be more appropriately confined to the Sources section. I am removing “The total number of Maya cave sites located in the Puuc region of Yucatan is estimated[clarification needed] to be more than 2000, most of which are not open.[citation needed] The most extensive inventory estimates the existence of about 300 caves).[3]” as these two sentences seem to contradict one another. Will retrieve the reference before deleting. The actual number isn’t all that important and in any event will constantly need updating. Better to just not go there in my opinion, but if we are going to give a number we should settle on one referenced number Elinruby (talk) 02:03, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I was making changes to this article, but i believe this requires a thorough rewrite. Firstly, it has a sentence written in the first person tone, secondly, it includes opinions, thirdly, it doesn't match the quality standard of Wikipedia.
