Fair use rationale for Image:Ordinary People cover.jpg

Image:Ordinary People cover.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:48, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Suggest inclusion of strong narcissistic theme

Whether she intended or not, Judith Guest's character, Beth, exhibits a textbook version of [Personality Disorder]. In one reading of the book/film, the slow uncovering of this narcissism is the main theme of the story. At the film's conclusion, the father and son begin a new journey as they look to life beyond the malignant narcissistic manipulations of Beth.

An excellent summary of this perspective was written by Julie L Hall, a prolific author on NPD.

I found it interesting to see Mary Tyler Moore, who plays the role so well, defend Beth in an interview. Mary Tyler Moore must have empathy for the character to play her in the film, but Beth is a character with no empathy for others.

Some elements of Beth's NPD include:- No empathy for her son (Or anyone else)- Concern for appearances, above all- Manipulation of her husband through flattery, sex, bullying- Refusing to be photographed with her son- Throwing French toast down the sink, as soon as he says he is not hungry- Control, control, control, something that her son - echoing and following her lead - initially says is the purpose of the therapy

How did she get away with the narcissism for so long?Calvin, her husband, grew up an orphan, so did not have the perspective to see how a loving parent would act.

Question I cannot yet answer: What clues do her parents give to the origins of her narcissism?

She's talking about the movie, on which we have a separate article. This talk page is for the article about the book. Daniel Case (talk) 19:41, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
I have added a paragraph to the film article about this. Daniel Case (talk) 05:33, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
