"He sat on the Woolsack for three years, and in 1919, on his retirement, was created Viscount Finlay". This seems to imply that he chose to retire as Lord Chancellor: Lord Finlay was a distant relative of mine (great-great-uncle), and there's a story in the family that he received a message saying "The Woolsack is required for another". AndrewWTaylor 13:17, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
