Nothing is known about Vatsyayana's life except for the book. I suspect the statement about prostitutes is pure speculation. If you have a citation for it, add it back along with the citation. Arvindn 00:44, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Vatsyayana's dates

On the question of dates, the Kamasutram itself states that the material had existed for a long time before Mallanaga Vatsyayana summarised it in its present form (the shlokas minus the Jayamangala commentary). I don't know on what basis John Keay quotes the 2nd century CE but it is entirely possible as no one actually knows when Vatsyayana lived, so the comments about the Gupta period and Keay's statement being dubious have no foundation in fact and should certainly be removed. In my own translation I made it clear that my placement of the text in the Gupta period was a guess, based on Vatsyayana's descriptions of daily life, arts and culture and his knowledge of geography.Indrasinha (talk) 10:16, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
