Pre-Crimen war Volunteers

Is there another article that deals with the pre-1856 Volunteers?--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♣ 22:04, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

W.S. Gilbert

The playright and librettist W. S. Gilbert joined the Volunteers at its creation, and rose to the rank of Captain in the Royal Aberdeenshire Highlanders, one of the divisions of the Volunteer Army. He was promoted to the honourary rank of Major upon his resignation in 1878.[1]

I've removed this image and its footnotes, because the Royal Aberdeenshire Highlanders wasn't a Volunteer unit - it was a Militia battalion. This interview seems to bear that out, as it notes:

I was intended for the Royal Artillery, and read up during the Crimean War. Of course, it came to an end just as I was prepared to go up for examination. No more officers were required, and further examinations were indefinitely postponed until I was over age. I was offered a line commission, but declined; but eventually, in 1868, I was appointed Captain of the Royal Aberdeenshire Highlanders (Militia), a post I held for sixteen years.

Frustrated professional rather than enthusiastic volunteer, it seems, and it would explain why he was appointed to an Aberdeenshire unit not a London one! Shimgray | talk | 21:15, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Volunteer Force: Great War?

What was the Volunteer Force that existed during the Great War? See below. Obviously some kind of home service units, as can be seen by the appointments as County Commandant, County Adjutant, Group Commandant, and some retired officers receiving temporary commissions of much lower rank than held while in the Regular Army. But its not the Territorial Force, the Royal Defence Corps, the Territorial Force Reserve or the Special Reserve, since they are mentioned separately elsewhere in this issue of the Gazette.
