Why sometimes "Reference(s)"?

This template often (always?) renders the one field heading as "Reference(s)", this is, with parentheses (e.g., List of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School people). For the reference sections, however, we always use the plural even if there's only one entry (see MOS:APPENDIX). This template should probably do the same unless there's a good reason. Strangely, the example given in the template's documentation gives "References" without the parenthesis. Anybody familiar with this template want to change it so that it always displays "References"?
