Template talk:Infobox Buddhist temple

a few things to add

Might I make a few suggestions for things to add to the template? The Japanese Wikipedia's version of the template includes alternate names for the temple, the primary image enshrined there (i.e. which Buddha/Bodhisattva - Amitabha, Dainichi, Kannon... and in what aspect), groupings the temple is associated with (such as the 33 Kannon temples of the Tokyo area, or the 88 of the Shikoku pilgrimage), and important cultural properties. I imagine that many of these are relevant for temples outside Japan as well; other countries' cases may suggest other attributes instead.

Also, a minor quibble, but is there a reason we list the phone number? That seems a bit...

Functionality and optional parameters

  • Re phone numbers - WP:NOTDIRECTORY and inappropriate - so removed.
  • I've made all parameters optional as per request made of me.
  • Seems silly to have webpage as next section - its no different in characetr to the address/country information. That said, long winded url addresses look messy, so for the display show alternative text of "website". If one wishes the parameter can still have its own alternative text eg as "http://www.foo.com National" which would show as National website. Some rather more advanced coding is needed than just {{{website}}} to cope with urls that might include parameter assigning (ie include a "=" which gets treated as assigning parameter value in this our template vs an assignment within the url address). Finally absence of website value could mean one of 2 things - either editor does know the value to enter, or the temple has no website - so an option of "None" been permitted.
  • usage instructions moved over to a /doc subpage (so these can be edited separately without riosking upsetting the template coding)

Let me know if anyone has any queries or wish-list. David Ruben Talk 01:58, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I selected just defining image size, is there really any need to specify landscape setting or not - generally infoboxes should be of fixed width and so that is main parameter to define for image sizing. If complex rules re landscape/portrait alternative size defaults wanted, just ask. David Ruben Talk 02:04, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Link to "Glossary of Japanese Buddhism"

To user Drfunko:I undid your deletion for several reasons:

  • I believe this is not only the right place for the link (because the article explains many things that are indispensable to understand the structure and function of a Japanese temple), it is the also the only place where the article can get some exposure. Where else should I put it?
  • I think that, rather than this glossary be out of place, you should think that it's the other glossaries, for example for Thai temples, that are missing. They should be there too. Glossaries for China, Thailand, Korea and Vietnam.
  • Where it is, it bothers no one. If you don't need it, just ignore it.

That article is the result of a month of work. Please do not delete the link again before discussing the subject with me. urashimataro (talk) 13:18, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

To user urashimataro (talk):

You have done great work on your Glossary of Japanese Buddhism. It looks very thorough and detailed – amazing that it only took you a month!

The link "Glossary of Japanese Buddhism" you posted to Template:Infobox_Buddhist_temple does need to be relocated, though:

  • You wrote "...it is the also the only place where the article can get some exposure. Where else should I put it?" Put it in the Japanese Buddhism sidebar (Template:JapaneseBuddhism). A link to your article would fit in perfectly there and would be of much greater use. (See how it appears on this article)
  • This would allow a higher degree of clarity overall: an article representing a Tibetan temple could show the infobox and the Tibetan Buddhism sidebar without the Japanese Glossary link, while an article on a Japanese temple could show the infobox and the Japanese Buddhism sidebar containing a link to the glossary.
  • You may wish to spread the Japanese Buddhism sidebar by putting it on any relevant articles, such as Buddhism in Japan, Religion in Japan, Shingon Buddhism, Kūkai, Shinran, Dogen, Buddhist terms and concepts, and any pages where you feel it is necessary to have the link to the glossary, including pages on Japanese temples. There are definitely many pages that need it.
  • This is simply a matter of whether the link is relevant to the main content of all the pages on which it is displayed, and this particular infobox is displayed on a variety of pages representing different schools of Buddhism. Japanese Buddhism is just one of many types of Buddhism – this info box is displayed, and has the potential to be displayed, on articles on Chinese, Korean, Tibetan, Indian, Sri Lankan, Thai, Laotian, Burmese, Cambodian, Malaysian, and Indonesian Buddhist temples. For example, the infobox is currently on the article "Amaravati Buddhist Monastery", about a Theravada monastery in England, along with the "Glossary of Japanese Buddhism" link. Do you think a solitary link to a glossary of Japanese terms is relevant on a page like this? It's out-of-place, isn't it?
  • To your comment "...you should think that it's the other glossaries, for example for Thai temples, that are missing": we could add glossaries for many languages and types of Buddhism to this infobox, yet they still might not be relevant to the article on which the infobox is displayed. That's why we have sidebars and other templates for each specific type of Buddhism (see Category:Buddhism_templates).

I am now moving the link "Glossary of Japanese Buddhism" from the Buddhist temple infobox to the Japanese Buddhism sidebar. I hope you see this is as a reasonable change and understand the rationale for it. If you have any further objections, please explain them here and post a Talkback note on my user talk page.

Thanks,

Alternative name

If you look at eg Ise-Shima National Park there's an | alt_name = 伊勢志摩国立公園 field. Is anyone keen on having a similar feature in the Buddhist temple template so that it can include the name of the temple in the local script? Thanks, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 16:26, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Ignore above, can use

Map

If you look at Mount Omoto there is a map as well as an image; are | map / | location parameters that might be usefully included here? (See Template:Infobox mountain) --Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 08:55, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

It looks like there are some map parameters active, for example pushpin_map, and map_caption, that perhaps have been added since the above comment was made. However, they seem to be missing from the documentation. Are there any other parameters missing from the documentation? --papageno (talk) 02:01, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
