Yes, edit summaries are generally good practice, but generally editors don't template other established editors over not leaving them. I think it would have been more helpful if, instead of a generic message about edit summaries, you had discussed with 187Ernest specifically why he should have left edit summaries in his minor edit conflict with you over the size of San Antonio's African-American population, to aid in resolution of that conflict. As it stands, you templating him over edit summaries appears to this uninvolved observer that you knew he hadn't violated any policy, but you didn't agree with him so you were looking for something petty to wag your finger at him for. As 187Ernest seems to be a problematic editor in more serious ways (see my admonishment to him over Southern hospitality, focusing on trifles like edit summaries is missing the forest for the trees, an unhelpful distraction.
