Thank you for the warm welcome!

You aren't by chance attending Wikimania 2013? If you are I'll shake your hand in person during lunch today. :-) DrewHeath (talk) 23:47, 10 August 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it to Wikimania 2013, though I was in the PRC earlier this year. The timing just didn't work out. Oh, well. Perhaps things'll work out better for Wikimania 2014 and I'll see you then? Happy editing! – Philosopher Let us reason together. 00:02, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 00:02, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Request Help to Make Article Live

I have a notable article with references that want to make live. Wiki administrators could delete it, so I'm trying to head that off. Any advice or assistance would be great.

My article is in my Sandbox right now. Here is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Nrwjones/sandbox.

Thanks for the help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nrwjones (talkcontribs) 11:55, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Sorry for my late reply. The biggest problem I see with the article is that it doesn't yet demonstrate its subject's notability. Basically, what makes Qubole special? Has it been widely discussed by the media? Are there any books about it? Do significant companies/individuals do business with it? Just answering one of these questions may not be quite enough, see our notability policy for the actual rules, but they are a good starting point for expanding your draft article. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 23:45, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Bradley Manning

I am editing from phone so I made so errors my other edits were in error but I'm correct in adding that he is a former soldier as once he was convicted and dishonorably discharged he became a former soldier. Also please leave any messages you have for me on my talk please do not leave messages for me on your talk as I will probably not see them thank you very much I can't properly sign this since I'm on my phone. TucsonDavid

Sorry for my late reply, but if you are having troubles over whether to call Manning a "former" soldier or not, you should probably discuss it on the talk page to try to reach an agreement there. Given the contentious editing on that article and my limited internet access, I'm avoiding it for the time being. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 23:39, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Philosopher. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 22:09, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Iowa Congress

What are we aloud to do regarding pictures of the congressmen? Can we use their official picture, or will that get us in copyright trouble?--Studlaff (talk) 22:40, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

For the United States Congress, you can use official pictures, but be sure to tag them as {{pd-usgov}} when you upload them. For pictures of the IOwa General Assemly, you can use the low-resolution (but not the high-resolution) official photos, but you should upload those to Wikimedia Commons (Wikipedia's media repository) and tag them with {{Iowa General Assembly official portrait permission}}. Many official photos of Iowan politicians are already available at commons:Category:Official Portraits of Members of the Iowa General Assembly. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 19:19, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Geoff Morrell

Hi Philosopher. My name is Arturo and I work for BP. I am the company's official representative here on Wikipedia and I'm looking for help with a BP-related article that I thought might relate to your interests. Perhaps you've seen my message on the Wikiproject Biography talk page, but if not, I'm looking for someone who can help make a few updates to the Geoff Morrell (spokesperson) article.

Geoff is the former Press Secretary of the Department of Defense and is currently BP's senior vice president of US communications and external affairs. I saw your name on the list of members of Wikiproject Biography and your note saying you are interested in politics and government, so I thought that maybe Geoff's article is something you could help with. The main request is on the article's talk page. I hope you'll have a moment to look at it. Thanks. Arturo at BP (talk) 15:49, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

User:Arturo at BP: Sorry for the delayed reply - it looks like User:Johnbod is handling things well for now. If you have any further issues, I'd be glad to help, but may not be able to reply in a very timely manner, unfortunately. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 19:10, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
