- Invalid {{PD-URAA}} claim: as this was taken after 1925, it can't have been published before 1926, which is a requirement for British photos using this copyright tag. Stefan2 (talk) 00:41, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
- I have changed the tag for PD-UK as the image was taken in 1928 by an unknown author, therefore the copyright expired in the UK in 1998 70 years after it was created in 1928 under UK copyright law. Jack1956 (talk) 19:44, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
- Note: This image is currently tagged as non-free. If there is a dispute with the rationale, please tag the image with {{dfu}} or list it at WP:Non-free content review. AnomieBOT⚡ 20:12, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
- {{PD-UK}} only covers the source country, this still needs clarification of copyright status in the US. January (talk) 17:12, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
- There is no alternative earlier image of the subject that I can find and I have spent a lot of time looking. Isn't it Wikipedia policy that if a free image could not be found after a reasonable search NFCC rules allow the Lead image in bio articles to be a non-free image? Jack1956 (talk) 20:56, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
- Fair use could be claimed for Hilda Runciman, Viscountess Runciman of Doxford, but it would have to be removed from the other two articles it is currently used in (St Ives by-election, 1928 and Tavistock (UK Parliament constituency)). January (talk) 21:07, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
- Didn't know it was on other articles. Let's do that then - keep it on bio and delete from the others. Jack1956 (talk) 21:45, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
- There is no evidence that {{PD-UK}} applies. That template can only be used for photos by unknown photographers. This one seems to be scanned from a newspaper. It might be possible to claim that the photographer is unknown if the photographer isn't named in the newspaper, but you can't make that claim without first checking the image caption in the newspaper. Unfortunately, the image is only sourced to a private e-mail, so it isn't trivial to find out which newspaper you should check for an image caption. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:31, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
- This is getting ridiculous. Those of us who live in the real world do not have time to go to a newspaper library and check through every newspaper/journal/magazine at that date in 1928 on the off-chance we might find the name of the photographer and then see if we might be able to find out when s/he died! Newspaper photographers in that period were not credited in a caption; it could have been taken by any one of a number of staff photographers. The photographer is unknown and the {{PD-UK}} tag is being used correctly. Can we move on from this waste of time now, please? Jack1956 (talk) 09:28, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
- Keep: This is clearly PD-UK with no credit shown with the image.Graemp (talk) 17:08, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
- If you do not have enough information about the source for a photo, then you can't claim that it is in the public domain. If it has been published with attribution at some point, then it doesn't satisfy {{PD-UK-unknown}}. You can't make something "anonymous" by uploading an image to the Internet without specifying the source. Furthermore, there is no evidence that it was published before 1926, which is a requirement for it to be in the public domain in the United States. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:16, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

- Convert to non-free for one article as proposed earlier. Unfortunately it is copyrighted in the United States, see WP:Non-U.S. copyrights#Restored copyrights (it fails point 3 of the four-point test since the earliest it could have entered the public domain in the UK is 1998). The US copyright expires in 2023 if I'm right in thinking that the applicable term is 95 years from publication. January (talk) 19:01, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
- Point taken. I also notice some new information has been added to the description page suggesting this image originated c. 1910, but we still don't know when it was published. Without that information I can't think of a way to prove that this image is PD in the United States, so it's unfree for our purposes even if {{PD-UK}} is valid. January (talk) 19:51, 6 December 2013 (UTC)
- It is correct that the image was created around 1910 judging by the hat, hair colour and facial features when compared to a 1927 portrait of her held by the NPG. It is inconceivable that any publishing house would hold onto a photo from this period and then publish it after 1926, which are the only circumstances in which it would fail public domain status.Graemp (talk) 04:19, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
