Cette liste exclut donc d'autres moyens techniques, comme la traction par induction électromagnétique[réf. nécessaire] et les systèmes de transport sur voies accessibles à d'autres moyens de transport ou aux piétons, par exemple le tramway, parfois appelé métro léger.

Ce qui suit est une liste des métros du monde actuellement en construction. Il convient de noter que, dans certains cas, il n'est pas toujours clair de savoir si le système sera considéré complètement comme un métro quand il sera opérationnel. Seuls les réseaux en construction dans les villes n'ayant actuellement pas de métros sont listés ici , l'Arabie saoudite, la Côte d'Ivoire, la Mongolie et la Serbie, construisent actuellement le premier réseau métropolitain de leur histoire.
