Фриман, Дерек

Родился в Новой Зеландии в семье австралийца и новозеландки. Мать занималась образованием сына и осталась для него близким человеком на всю жизнь. В 1934 году пошел в колледж. В 1937 году получил сертификат учителя. В 1938 году на семинаре заинтересовался работами Мид.

Владел «одним из крупнейших книжных собраний Канберры»^[5], после его смерти личная библиотека учёного перестала быть единым целым.

Его исследованиям и позиции по поводу работ Мид посвящена пьеса «Еретик» (1996).
