Rolando Villazón wurde 1972 in Mexico- Stadt geboren. Im Alter von 11 Jahren ging er an die "Espacios academy for performing arta", wo er Unterricht in Musik, Schauspiel, Ballett und Modern Dance nahm.
Der Bariton Arturo Nieto weckte 1990 sein Interesse am Operngesang und wurde auch sein erster Gesangslehrer. Villazón setzte seine Gesangsausbildung am nationalen Musikkonservatorium bei Enrique Jaso fort und gewann zwei nationale mexikanische Gesangswettbewerbe. Danach nahm der Bariton Gabriel Mijares den jungen Tenor unter seine Fittiche und brachte ihn auf den Weg zu einer internationalen Karriere.
1998 trat Rolando Villazón dem renommierten Merola Opera Program der San Francisco Opera bei, wo er u.a. an Meisterklassen von Joan Sutherland teilnahm. Das Young Artists Program der Pittsburgh Opera war die nächste wichtige Station, mit erfolgreichen Auftritten in Bellinis „I Capuleti e i Montecchi“, Donizettis „Lucia di Lammermoor“ und Samuel Barbers „Vanessa“. 1999 gewann Villazón u.a. den Zarzuela Prize und belegte den Zweiten Platz in Plácido Domingos Operalia-Gesangswettbewerb.
Den Start seiner internationalen Karriere feierte Rolando Villazón 1999 mit seinem gefeierten Europa-Debüt in Genua als Des Grieux in Massenets „Manon“, unmittelbar gefolgt von erfolgreichen Auftritten an einigen der großen Opernhäuser der Welt wie u.a. der Opéra Bastille Paris, der Bayerischen Staatsoper, der Deutschen Oper Berlin, der Hamburgischen Staatsoper, der Wiener Staatsoper, dem Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, der New Yorker Met sowie der Los Angeles Opera, gefeiert in Partien wie Rodolfo in Puccinis „La Bohème“, Alfredo in Verdis „La Traviata“, Roméo in Gounods „Roméo et Juliette“, Nemorino in Donizettis „L’Elisir d’amore“ und Edgardo in Donizettis „Lucia di Lammermoor“.

Emilio Rolando Villazón Mauleón (b. February 22, 1972, in Mexico City) is a Mexican tenor. He is currently in international demand as an opera singer, and also maintains an active recording career. He has recorded three solo CDs with Virgin Classics and is additionally featured, along with Patrizia Ciofi and Topi Lehtipuu, on the upcoming CD recording of Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda by Claudio Monteverdi, conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm.
In August 2005, he sang a highly regarded Alfredo with Anna Netrebko as Violetta Valéry in Verdi's La Traviata at the Salzburg Festival, conducted by Carlo Rizzi and directed by Willy Decker.
In 2007, Mr Villazón will switch his recording company - he has already signed an exclusive long-term contract with Deutsche Grammophon. His final album under the Virgin Classics contract, an album of Zarzuelas under the baton of Plácido Domingo, is planned for release in Spring 2007. An album of operatic duets featuring Rolando Villazón and Anna Netrebko has recently been recorded with the Dresdener Staatskapelle under Nicola Luisotti for Deutsche Grammophon and is expected to be released in early 2007.

Rolando Villazón comenzó su formación artística a los once años, entrando en la Academia de Artes Espacios. Decidió consagrarse a la música. En 1998 es alumno de Joan Sutherland en la Ópera de San Francisco. En 1999 gana el premio de público, el de zarzuela y el segundo premio del Concurso de Plácido Domingo: Operalia. En febrero de 2003 recoge en Francia el premio a la "Revelación internacional del año".
Es un cantante de ópera. En agosto de 2005 cantó un Alfredo con críticas muy favorables, junto a Anna Netrebko como Violetta Valéry en la ópera de Verdi La Traviata en el Festival de Salzburgo, dirigidos por Carlo Rizzi con puesta en escena de Willy Decker. En octubre de 2005, se presentó en la Ópera de la Bastilla con La Bohème. En julio de 2006 participó en Alemania, junto a la soprano Anna Netrebko y Plácido Domingo, en un concierto con motivo del Mundial de Fútbol.
