The Short History of the Hungarian Reformed Church of America
At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a massive immigration of Hungarians tothe United States, which continued during the Great Depression. These Hungarians establishedtheir churches with great faith and enthusiasm and built churches across America. TheAmerican Hungarian Reformed Church is the only independent, organized church body outsidethe Carpathian Basin that is state-recognized.In the first two decades of the 20th century, these congregations were part of theoverseas dioceses of the Reformed Church in Hungary. During the initial difficulties, in theabsence of church bodies and organized Hungarian communities in America, these churcheswere helped by the Dutch Reformed, German Reformed, and Presbyterian churches.On October 7, 1921, most of these congregations accepted the Tiffin Agreement inTiffin, Ohio. By signing this agreement, they became part of the Reformed Church in the UnitedStates and are still part of the United Church of Christ, Calvin Synod. However, not everyHungarian Church and congregation accepted the Tiffin Agreement. Some were seekingindependence, and others later realized they did not want to be coordinated by the foreignleadership of the American Reformed Church. These churches established an entirelyindependent church body in Duquesne, PA, on December 9, 1924: the American IndependentHungarian Reformed Church. This Church Body today is the Hungarian Reformed Church ofAmerica with 33 Churches (30 in the U.S. and 3 in Canada). In the last 100 years, manycongregations have closed their doors. But thankfully, others opened. There are 23 mother and12 mission churches, and 24 pastors serve these congregations. The church body comprisesthree dioceses: the Western Diocese, the Central Diocese, and the Eastern Diocese.
