Months ago, I wrote an email to the Nom Foundation saying we needed confirmation on place names. This was called for by a HK editor who wants to make Chinese Wikipedia articles about Vietnamese place names, but is frustrated for lesser-known place names because he could find no source telling how the names "used to" be written before the abandonment of Nom in official Vietnamese documents. That is, he wants to make entries using the actual nom characters that used to be used, so as to get the meaning right, as well as the sound (whereas Chinese just use any characters just for the sound, for place names like Moscow or New York). So I wrote to the Nom Foundation. My question was referred to two top Vietnamese-language scholars, both of whom said they didn't have the answers or sources to answer these questions (!). This was probably a half year ago. Then, about 3 days ago, out of the blue, John Balaban said that one of his contacts in Vietnam, a Mr. Cuong, had prepared a PDF file giving all the Nom for the current provinces of Vietnam. I'm afraid I don't know more because he didn't put me in touch with Mr. Cuong. However, I will do my best to find out whether all of them were actual Nom used during the time Nom were used in official documents (including place names that existed before they were provinces), rather than just being his ascription/assignation of nom for place names for "how it would have been rendered in nom." Does this answer your questions? I still don't object to moving the Nom in any or all of the province articles to a separate etymology section (such as one might find for a place like Oklahoma or Ohio, where the original meaning of these place names might be given later in the article, in a "History," "Etymology," or "origin of name" section). In most cases, it seems that the province names are descriptive, and in the case of the place names derived from Tai or Khmer, or some other non-Sinitic or Vietic language, we can describe that too, as well as the Nom that were formerly used, because the choice of characters by those old Vietnamese bureaucrats is also meaningful, even when applied to place names that were not originally of Sino-Vietnamese origin. I agree with you that it gives the wrong signal to have the characters at the head of the article. I don't think there would be any objection at WikiProject Vietnam to moving them, in each article, to a special section entitled "Origin of name" or whatever. It isn't clear at all to the reader what the Vietnamese name means. We'd do that for an Italian church with an unfamiliar name, or any other one, I think, like explaining what "Taj Mahal" means or whatever. Another question: do you agree that rượu đế, rượu quốc lủi, and rượu lậu are physically the same liquor? If so, we'll keep them all under rượu đế as we have it now. However, in my estimation, the illegality of all three of those makes them suitable for being grouped together in one article, with one title (whether that's the current title or one of the other two). Sort of like the moonshine article as a general title for American illegal distilled liquors. However, for ruou trang, I think we should make an article for that, because it isn't necessarily illegal; it's equivalent to the Chinese term baijiu (i.e., it refers broadly to all distilled liquors, which may be very strong). Let me know your thinking and I can go ahead and make a ruou trang article (which can have links to all the varieties of ruou trang, and we can eventually make articles for all of them, as we're doing for Bánh. Hi there. Badagnani has added quite a few poker players and other people of Vietnamese descent with the Viet wikiproject and I was wondering what you thought about these being in the scope of the project. My personal opinion is that poker players, Vietnamese American politicians and businessmen shouldn't be in WP:VIET because they don't operate inside Vietnam/none of their notability is related to Vietnam (unless they were notable when they were still in VN). I didn't remove people on the basis that they don't live in Vietnam, I only removed them if they are not Vietnamese citizens but Vietnamese descent who do not do anything related to VN. For example, see Indian independence movement which also discusses a wide gamut of varying ideologies that were fighting for independence. There are two statistics regarding Vietnamese people in Australia; one is the number who are born in Vietnam, the other is the number of Vietnamese speakers. The first does not count those who are born in Australia, which there probably is a significant number (I believe they number 30% in the US), and might include those ethnic Chinese who are born in Vietnam. The second statistics might overstate the number due to some who are born elsewhere and are not ethnically Vietnamese but still speak Vietnamese (this seems paradoxical; if they are born elsewhere and aren't Vietnamese, why would they speak Vietnamese?), but it also does not count those who do not speak Vietnamese at home. Overall, I think the second statistics present a closer picture of the number of Vietnamese people in Australia. DHN

The Australian Bureau of Statistics produces two sets of statistics worth utilising

• Number of persons resident in Australia who were born in Vietnam
• Number of persons resident in Australia who claim Vietnamese ancestry. (about 20% of all respondants claim two ancestries, 80% claim one). Persons born to Vietnamese parents in Australia are likely to nominate themselves as Vietnamese, so there is no risk of an undercount. There are also a small number of Vietnamese Australians who were born in refugee camps in Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Adding the number of people who regularly speak Vietnamese at home is worthwhile (we don't have statistics on the number of people who can speak Vietnamese per se), but I would not use this number to define the number of Vietnamese Australians. Many Vietnamese families now communicate in English at home. There are also Vietnamese-Chinese speakers who would communicate in either English or Chinese.

They stated that it was "free" because the campaign has released the images use into the public domain. They provided an example of where that free use has been implemented. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box.
