Welcome

Hi KFP/Archive, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for your contributions to the coolest online encyclopedia I know of =). I sure hope you stick around; we're always in need of more people to create new articles and improve the ones we already have. You'll probably find it easiest to start with a tutorial of how the wikipedia works, and you can test stuff for yourself in the sandbox. When you're contributing, you'll probably find the manual of style to be helpful, and you'll also want to remember a couple important guidelines. First, write from a neutral point of view, second, be bold in editing pages, and third, use wikiquette. Those are probably the most important ones, and you can take a look at some others at the policies and guidelines page. You might also be interested in how to write a great article and possibly adding some images to your articles.

Be sure to get involved in the community – you can contact me at my talk page if you have any questions, and you can check out the village pump, where lots of wikipedians hang out and discuss things. If you're looking for something to do, check out the community portal. And whenever you ask a question or post something on a talk page, be sure to sign your name by typing ~~~~.

Again, welcome! It's great to have you. Happy editing! --Spangineer (háblame) 18:19, Jun 12, 2005 (UTC)

Minor Edits

A minor edit is one which fixes minor things like spelling and grammar. Adding an item to a list is not a minor edit. Reub2000 17:07, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • Thanks! I reviewed Wikipedia:Minor edit and it seems that I've been marking my edits as minor a bit too often. KFP 17:19, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

CSD proposal

You marked Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal as clsoed for voting, but you did not make a coresponding change on any of the many subpages where the voting is/was actually taking place. Those pages should probably be similarly marked. Are you resultign thsio proposal? DES 16:28, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

  • I have not been actively involved with this proposal, I just happened to notice that the deadline had passed and updated the page accordingly. However, as I have nothing else to do at the moment, I think I'll tag the other pages as well. --KFP 16:39, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

updated population

Please present some kind of source for the updated population of Helsinki that you claim.

As Most sources i can google up says balues in the 970 - 980 thousand region and as helsnki's population movement is not at a big growth i am a bit sceptical about the figure.

A few months back there was someone who tried to frantically over and over up the numbers of inhabitants in the cities of Finland on wikipedia, so a source would be great to have.

Gillis 13:03, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I just decided to check the claim of 975,000 and added the population of Helsinki to those of Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen (I retrieved population stats from the cities' official websites at [1], [2], [3] and [4]). The sum was 986,531. I meant to present the sources but forgot... --KFP 08:55, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Even if the copyright owner granted permission for it to be used exclusively on wikipedia on actual wikipedia discussion pages? Doesn't that cut the muster, I mean its not copyvio. A mcmurray 01:47, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Wikipedia permits fair use images in articles but featured picture candidates must be in the public domain or have a free license. --KFP (talk | contribs) 02:17, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
That's pretty ridiculous. The copyright owner gave permission to use it on wikipedia, just because everyone can't have it shouldn't exclude it. I am really beginning to not like Wikipedia at all. A mcmurray 02:19, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Well, as Wikipedia is a free content project, we cannot accept images, text or other media that is licensed as "Wikipedia-only" (because such content is not free). --KFP (talk | contribs) 02:48, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
I removed the nomination (though I don't believe the reasoning you provided is true--and this isn't a personal reflection upon you) because the photo is copyrighted and its copyright owner as well as myself don't really believe that Wikipedia should be able to demand that it be released under free license. Thanks for your input and such.A mcmurray 18:05, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
  • I understand that it may seem unreasonable that Wikipedia requires that images must have a license that allows creation of derivative work, commercial use and reuse by third parties. However, licenses that restrict such usage are incompatible with Wikipedia's copyright policy. --KFP (talk | contribs) 11:18, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
That's fine. Can't fight the power, at least in this case, I'll just find another image to nominate, btw are Wikimedia Commons images eligible, I suppose they must appear in a Wikipedia article huh? A mcmurray 18:25, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Yes, all Commons images should either be in the public domain or have a sufficiently free license (for example the GNU Free Documentation License or Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike license). A good help page for evaluating potential featured picture candidates is at WP:WIAFP. --KFP (talk | contribs) 21:56, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Im somewhat puzzled as to why this image: 5 was not promoted, after all a marginal consensus of support was achieved. There were threee "support" and two "object" tags and one "comment, yet the article was not promoted even though the support tags represented public opinion. Could you please explain to me why it was not promoted? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ahadland1234 (talkcontribs).

  • Hi! Featured picture promotion usually requires a two-thirds supermajority and four or more supporting votes. In this case, the image had only three supporting votes and a simple majority after twelve days of discussion. You may renominate the image at WP:FPC if you feel that the candidate received too little attention. --KFP (talk | contribs) 16:24, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
    • Can i be cheeky and ask you to do that for me, becuase im too stupid. I just think its a really good picture and deserves to be featured. Could i by any chance get your views on whether it should be Featured, maybe you can help me get it on the front page :-P Ahadland 22:29, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
      • Yes, I can do the renomination for you. I'm not sure if the image will pass as it is not as sharp or detailed as many other featured picture candidates. However, consensus may find this lack of image quality acceptable because the subject is unique and getting a better photo may be very difficult. --KFP (talk | contribs) 00:58, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
      • Thank you very much for helping with the re-nomination —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ahadland1234 (talkcontribs).

Is the consensus good enough to make the picture featured yet? Ahadland 21:57, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Nope, the nom has to be listed for at least seven days. --KFP (talk | contribs) 22:49, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Explanation and reasoning for 'Brummel brew'

This article is relevant to support the lore of Microsoft and events in the company's history with its employees. It is considered a milestone in employee morale, and is not a term invented by a small group. It is widely know amongst 70,000 employees. Please consider removing the proposal for deletion. If necessary I will create a Lisa Brummel page and include this item. Let me know what you think. Thanks. Marktalkington 12:19, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Memberlist organization for WP:PSP

Hi! First off, thanks for your hard work at WP:PSP. I joined recently and have been trying to help with organizational stuff.

I noticed that you recently re-sorted the WP:PSP member list alphabetically. It's not a very big deal, but I think we can actually present more information by listing members chronologically, as it was. This way, viewers can get a rough idea of when each member joined, which would be extremely difficult by parsing through edit histories. In contrast, organizing the list alphabetically removes this information and doesn't seem to add much.

Also, I believe that chronological member lists are more common, especially for projects of this size. I don't think that there is any actual guideline regarding this, however.

Instead of reverting your edit and possibly creating a misunderstanding, I wanted to bring this up with you first. Any thoughts or preferences?

Thanks,-Fadookie Talk 08:53, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi! That's okay with me, I'll restore the chronological order. Cheers! --KFP (talk | contribs) 15:47, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Move of WikiProject History of Bangladesh to Wikipedia: namespace

Hi there,

Thanks for the move! I was actually busy creating Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Bangladesh as a copy of WikiProject History of Bangladesh in an attempt to help User:Aditya Kabir (who posted helpme) figure out why the todo template didn't work as expected, planning to db-author the original page, because I wasn't certain whether it is possible to move from mainspace to another namespace; but now I know. I ran into an edit conflict when you moved the page, which confused the crap out of me, but all seems okay now. :)

One question: Do you think the redirect from WikiProject History of Bangladesh to Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Bangladesh should stay, or rather not?

Thanks. —XhantarTalk 12:10, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Me and another user

I've always had problems with Someguy0830 since 2005. Personally, I think that he is very selfish when it comes to editing the Naruto articles. He likes them only the way he wants them. Example: I wanted to add a certain signature technique to Orochimaru (Naruto), but he says 'no that signature technique is in the "anime only"' (japanese animation show, not the japanese comic). Since when are we only going by the manga comics and not the show? He says that it isn't notable enough even though it is used a grand total of three times in the animation show, just as the Hidden Shadow Snake (on Orochimaru's list) is used three times. I've had other problems with him, but can you help us settle this first? Power level (Dragon Ball) 22:06, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

After the first matter is taken care of, can you help me solve this matter as well? I'll be back later! Power level (Dragon Ball) 22:26, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Well, I suggest that you try to resolve the dispute by explaing your thoughts at Talk:Orochimaru (Naruto) and Talk:Kakashi Hatake and discussing the disputed edits with Someguy0830 and other involved editors there and hopefully you will reach an understanding. I cannot really "take sides" in this argument as I am not at all familiar with Naruto. Let me know if you cannot reach a consensus through discussion or if you have further questions. Link to .ogg file at "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2"

Greetings,

Thanks for answering my call for help regarding the link to the audio file of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. However, problems persist! When I click "play in browser", the music begins quite promptly, but is broken into small fragments (about one-half second each), many of them repeated as if on an old, scratched vinyl record...with silences of similar duration between fragments. Sometimes the music will "backtrack" a few bars, and eventually grinds to a halt within the first small section.

The file plays beautifully in "My Music", and I have installed all the necessary Java tools and oggcodecs to allow it play on Windows Media Player 10. (It also works if I use the "download and play directly" link on the "JOrbis Player Beta for Wikimedia" page...but the download takes more than an hour.) I have also read every Help Page I can find!!!

Is it possible that this system simply does not work on Dial-Up? (I live in the country, so there are few choices.) Or might my Java updates or oggcodecs be flawed downloads?

I should also mention that I use Firefox as my default browser. When I checked it with IE7 tonight, the old version of the page was still there, will the old audio link. After a bit of work, I was able to see the new version (which I believe you added). I tested it, on IE7, and had the same results there.

Is there not a system while will work for slow Internet connections?

Thanks for your time and attention. Prof.rick 07:35, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I can't test the "play in browser" feature right now as my browser doesn't support the JOrbisPlayer, but the file works fine if I download it and use my standalone audio player to listen to it. I think what you are experiencing may be a buffering problem related to the low bandwidth of the dial-up internet connection: The duration of the recording is about thirteen minutes, but downloading the 14 megabytes of data over dialup takes much longer which means that the modem cannot keep up with the audio stream. My two comments

I discussed Ottoman Empire history in Rumi page, but Rumi did not live in Ottoman Empire, so I think my discussion was at wrong place.Second, I answered "does anyone know when some of these reforms(Atatürk reforms) changed back?" question, but this is not about the content of that article, but a general question, I regret I have answered that question. These are only 2 examples, but sometimes I do not like my comments on talk pages.Ayasi 19:44, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, those comments seemed quite harmless to me. Oh, I just noticed that you used the PD-self image copyright tag (which states "I, the creator of this work, hereby release it into the public domain...") on the image page. That tag is for cases where the uploader and creator of the image are the same person. As for searching, Wikipedia doesn't actually have an effective search engine for images. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 23:10, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
    • May I ask how you found that picture, the one that as a better version of the one I had posted. ..::Virchu 00:23, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
I found it almost accidentally from Wikimedia Commons, the Wikimedia Foundation's shared media repository. It is possible to search for images using Wiki's own search engine or an external one such as Google. This, however doesn't work as well as, for example, Flickr's image search. Commons also has image galleries and categories (example). --KFP (talk | contribs) 17:11, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!

I was looking at his edit history and he actually added a profanity about another admin that warned this user. Thanks! --Zrulli 22:40, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Greetings

Hi. Just curious, do you warn vandals, or discuss articles? I want to try to avoid editcountitis, but if that's the price to pay for ensuring that an RfA candidate passes - which brings me to the other question. Do you think you're ready for adminship? Xiner (talk, email) 00:52, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Xiner! I often warn or notify users when I revert inappropriate edits but not always, for example in cases where some time has passed after the reverted edit. Many of the unhelpful edits on Wikipedia come from shared computers/IP addresses (in schools, for example) and a message left on such an IP's talk page hours after the reverted edit was made is somewhat likely to be received by someone else than the intended person. I discuss articles on talk pages when appropriate, but not as often as some others as I rarely get into content disputes. As for adminship, I think I need a couple of weeks to look into a few things before being comfortable with an RfA. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 09:28, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok, cool. That's actually a good characteristic for an RfA candidate. If you need a nominator you know how to find me. Xiner (talk, email) 00:13, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Link for Seas (company)

Hello. I noticed you added a link for Seas (company) at Seas (disambiguation). I removed it for now, since there's not really any reason to have a redlink at a disambig page, but were you planning on creating a new article for it? If so, just revert my edit when you're done. Thanks, Satori Son 03:12, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I added the redlink to the Seas disambiguation page per WP:MOSDAB#Redlinks as I believe that an article on the company could and should be written. I may write the article myself if I find good sources, but right now I don't have those so I just put the redlink in as a bait. --KFP (talk | contribs) 09:33, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Help with my AFD

Hi there! Thanks for helping me out fixing that link! --Xnuala 23:06, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, you're welcome. In addition to fixing the links, I listed the nomination at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2007 March 5 using the afd3 template. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. --KFP (talk | contribs) 23:19, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Can you tell me what I did wrong? As you can see, I rather made a mess of it. --Xnuala 23:22, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Most importantly, you didn't do the third step in AfD in 3 steps. Also, the "pg" parameter in afd2 (step 2) should be just "article name", not "article name (second nomination)". Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 23:33, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
I know I missed step 3...I figured that since I caused so much havoc with Step 2 I should wait on Step 3 until someone gave me some advice!! Thanks! --Xnuala 23:56, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: Kings Quest move

Hi. I'm aware of the move tool, but the King's Quest page was already a redirect to King's Quest series, so unfortunately the move tool wouldn't have worked (I don't think, it never used to). Thanks for keeping a watch over it. -th1rt3en 22:58, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Crabs at a market

Hello KFP. I think you didn't gave enough time to the vote aforementioned. You stopped it just in the middle of it, when the last vote was around 8 hours before you stopped it. Also, there were more supporters than opposers, and the situation "Promoted"/"Not Promoted" can still be changed. Thank you, Tomer T 14:16, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I closed the nomination as it had been listed at WP:FPC for eight days and there was no consensus to promote it (vote count was 6.5 supports versus 5.5 opposes). Ideally, nominations should be closed after seven days but this is not always possible. If you disagree with the decision, you can ask for a second opinion at WT:FPC or renominate it later. Also, as compression artifacts were among the opposers' complaints, you could ask if Wpopp has an uncompressed version of the image. --KFP (talk | contribs) 14:55, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Going on Page

How can I get the WP:CHICOTW listed along with the other collaborations at Wikipedia:Goings-on. I pretty much run this collaboration. Also, our collaboration goes from Tuesday to Tuesday. Would the proper collaboration be the one that ended during the week or the one that started. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 18:54, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, the collaborations are transcluded to Wikipedia:Goings-on from Template:Announcements/Current collaborations so the collaboration will have to be added there with the same format as the others (i.e. a link to Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/COTW and a template that always links to the current collaboration). Let me know if you have further questions. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 20:35, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Help needed

The table on Mazharul Islam looks ugly to me. It's difficult to access, the size is intimidating, the last column that contains comments is way too wide, the projects coulmn or the second column doesn't project the projects strongly, and a grouping of the years may do it much good. Can you give a hand there? I have been advised by User:Real96 to take help from WP:TABLE, but since I am quite illiterate on this code thing it is not helping (I can steal codes from others fine, but writing or fixing it is way too scary for me). Cheers. Aditya Kabir 12:27, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I tweaked the table a bit. Do you think it is better now? --KFP (talk | contribs) 13:52, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

I've been trying to do the following:

  • Get the text in a slightly smaller size (not as small as the <small> code would generate, and all of it, not just the comments column)
  • Get the column sizes fixed (so that the comments column doesn't become the widest column)
  • Find out some way to make the projects in the projects column stand out more.
  • Get the years on the first column grouped together (one wide row for a particular year flanked by 2/3 rows of individual projects).
  • Put some more margin inside the cells.
  • And, change the colors of the table a bit (though this part I have figured out I don't know the web color codes enough to do that)

Can you help me to tweak it around a bit more? Aditya Kabir 14:00, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

My Question Concerns: Adding A Link Within Another Link

This is my Original Question: Please, can anyone tell me the proper format to create a link within another link? (Or, is this even possible?) For example, let's say that I want the text to read exactly: Arnold (The Governator) Schwarzenegger. What is the proper linking format that would create this exact text so that it links to both the "Arnold Schwarzenegger" article and the "The Governator" article? Please help. Thanks a lot! (JosephASpadaro 05:21, 13 March 2007 (UTC))

This is a response that I received: Well, you could do Arnold (The Governator) Schwarzenegger as Arnold (The Governator) Schwarzenegger. That's a little weird though. Max 16:54, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
This was my response to the response above: Thanks. Yes, I thought of that -- but it's certainly not an elegant way to achieve what I need. Furthermore, it's not quite accurate to have the text of the person's first name only (e.g., Arnold) link to his full name (e.g., Arnold Schwarzenegger). These types of nicknames happen all the time (e.g., Michael "Air" Jordan, Jesse "The Body" Ventura, etc.). I would think that there is an easy way to accomplish this. Any ideas? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 03:00, 16 March 2007 (UTC))
Sorry, I'm not aware of a practical means of placing a link inside another link. Adding one would also be confusing for most readers. Nicknames should generally not have separate articles: for example, The Governator exists simply as a redirect to the article Arnold Schwarzenegger. If it is necessary or important to include the nickname, it is probably best to go with the following format: Arnold "The Governator" Schwarzenegger. This produces the following: Arnold "The Governator" Schwarzenegger. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 01:30, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I guess that Arnold Schwarzenegger was a poor example. I meant something more along the lines of this: Henry ("The Fonz") Winkler -- done so that it would create a link to both the article on Henry Winkler, the actor -- as well as a link to a separate article on the fictitious TV character "The Fonz." Or, other examples: Ralph ("The Karate Kid") Macchio ... Jackie ("The Honeymooners") Gleason. Things of that nature. Any suggestions? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 04:11, 24 March 2007 (UTC))

Hmm... I think you'll have to think of another way to convey the same information to the reader. Also, depending on context, use of nicknames may be a bit too informal for an encyclopedia article. --KFP (talk | contribs) 18:59, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Why are you mentioning nicknames again? I specifically stated that the Arnold Schwarzenegger example (with the nickname of "The Governator") was a poor choice for an example on my part. Then, I gave three more pertinent examples, none of which contain a nickname -- but, rather, a reference to the actor's work. So, you have me confused. Please clarify. Thanks! (JosephASpadaro 19:33, 24 March 2007 (UTC))
Oh, sorry. Can you give me an example of an article where you would like to use this kind of linking? --KFP (talk | contribs) 20:24, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
The articles would (generally) involve actors, acting, television, movies, etc., but not necessarily. For example, a sentence might read: "The May 12, 1975 issue of TV Guide featured Henry (The Fonz) Winkler on its cover." I would like that sentence to link to both articles: the article on the actor (Henry Winkler) and the article on his TV character (The Fonz). It would seem inappropriate to make a link from simply "Henry" to the "Henry Winkler" article. Another example: "The 1983 Best Actor Oscar was awarded to Jackie (The Honeymooners) Gleason." These are simply fictitious examples that I concocted. The point is a person's name is often split with a nickname or common reference that is sandwiched between the person's first and last name. Another example: The singer Don ("American Pie") McClean spoke at the college graduation. Any thoughts? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 23:36, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
I think it might be better to write something along the lines of "The 1983 Best Actor Oscar was awarded to Jackie Gleason for his performance in The Honeymooners" or "The May 12, 1975 issue of TV Guide featured Henry Winkler, best known for his portrayal of Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli in Happy Days, on its cover". All depending on context, of course. --KFP (talk | contribs) 16:53, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. But, certainly, I am aware of how to rewrite the sentences in such a way that the nicknames/references are separated from being sandwiched in between the person's first and last names. That was not the issue. The issue is this - it is rather common to refer to someone in the following manner: Henry ("The Fonz") Winkler or Arnold (The Governator) Schwarzenegger or Jackie ("The Honeymooners") Gleason. Is it possible at all to create suitable links, using this exact verbiage style, to both pertinent articles (e.g., the Winkler article and the Fonz article)? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 02:35, 1 April 2007 (UTC))
Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. I never heard back from you, as of my last post. Still, I wanted to thank you for your help. Take care. (JosephASpadaro 01:58, 6 April 2007 (UTC))

Yes, I'm not aware of any other way to do it than the one Max Terry suggested. Happy editing! --KFP (talk | contribs) 02:22, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! (JosephASpadaro 02:38, 6 April 2007 (UTC))

Hi, I rescaled the image per criteria 2 and 3 of WP:FU#Policy. I am not aware of a separate policy for promotional images. Hurmata needs help

Hi. I want to mark an article for deletion *without logging in*. But without me logging in, Wikipedia won't create a page in the special forum for discussions of marked articles. I marked the article (John_Mauldin) for deletion anyway, but I'm limited to using the regular discussion page. I have used that discussion page to explain myself (see also http://www.johnmauldin.com, . The reason I don't want to have to log in is that I don't want to expose myself to the possibility of getting spammed at by the target of my protest. My worry is all the greater because the email I use for my Wikipedia account is different from the email where I've been getting spammed already. To conclude: how best can a Wikipedian mark an article for deletion on the ground that it serves a commercial purpose or on the ground that the person featured in the article is directly intruding in the lives of Wikipedians? Thanks. Hurmata 00:53, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

please, I recently added to the article on medieval 2 total war, a section on campaign gameplay, where i went into more depth on how the gameplay is balanced and so forth. The section took a while to get together, as I worked to make notes and be acurate in what I submitted. You're a sysop!

Hi, KFP/Archive, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop!

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, block anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on articles for deletion for more than 5 days (provided there's a consensus), protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. Need help on how to protest a persistent incompetent contributor

Hi, KFP, I don't mean to impose. The reason I am asking you specifically for help is that I was pleased with how you helped me previously when I posted a "cry for help" at my talk page.

There's this contributor who's English is so bad and who's regard for facts is so careless that I would like to have their IP address blocked. At the least, I would like someone in authority to talk to them. I do not like to call this person a vandal because their intentions are honorable and their postings do not demean people. This person edits the article, History of Portugal. They like to post in flurries of brief edits. And they are unregistered. I have already reverted their first flurry and justified myself in the article's Discussion page. What do you suggest I do now? Thanks. Hurmata 23:38, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Discussion is mostly the best way to resolve disagreements over editing. In this case it may be difficult to get in contact with the editor in question as he/she is editing anonymously, but Talk:History of Portugal is a good place to post concerns (as you already did). An alternative place is the IP's talk page at User talk:213.22.20.21 but messages left there may be received by someone else than the intended recipient. I also encourage you to be bold in improving the article and fixing errors there. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 16:19, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Copyvio

Nigrán: I put the tag back. I hope an administrator will do the right thing and remove the previous versions of the page then restore the page without the copyrighted material. If you agree that the previous versions are copyrighted, I would put db-copyvio on the page and then restore the page. Andreas  (T) 14:45, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

FP closures

Hey KFP, congrats to your recent promotion to the janitorial corps :-) Also, now that I closed my first FPC's and realized how burdensome it is, I wanted to let you know that it's ok if you only do the first three steps – mark the discussion as closed, mark the picture as promoted and let me know on my talk page – and I can take care of the other eight steps. I'm not surprised now why we have so few closers. Take care, ~ trialsanderrors 19:38, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

IP autoblock reversion

Thanks for undoing the autoblock on 194.176.105.40. It's extremely frustrating that one bad user can have such an impact. I don't know if sysadmins are aware but this IP (along with four or five others) act as proxy addresses for the entire NHS in the UK - tens of thousands of users. Thanks again AulaTPN 11:30, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, the IP addresses of logged-in users are not shown to admins. Autoblocks are 24 hour blocks of the blocked user's IP address and are automatically set by the MediaWiki software in an attempt to prevent further disruption. Thus blocking a vandalism-only account sometimes causes collateral damage. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Autoblock. Sorry for the inconvenience. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 11:59, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Oh yeah I completely understand but if the vandal was already identified as a registered user then I'm wondering why the sysop simply didn't autoblock the account? AulaTPN 07:31, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
If we only blocked specific accounts, the blocked user could keep disrupting Wikipedia by simply logging out or switching to another account and it could be very difficult to keep track of the disruption. Mostly blocks of IP addresses do not cause collateral damage (some shared IP addresses are exempted from autoblocks) but regrettably "mostly" does not mean "always". --KFP (talk | contribs) 20:06, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Image:Protect Your Republic Protest - 1 (2007-04-14) crop.jpg

Hi, KFP. I noticed that you protected this image as it is in main page. Could you please tell me the reason why the image on main pages should be protected? Anyways, Please reply in my talk page. Cheers! Daniel5127 | Talk 06:35, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Main page images, as well as everything else that appears on the main page are protected because of their high visibility. If they were not protected, they would very likely be vandalised, that is, someone would upload a different file (a shock image, for example) over the correct image. This would result in said shock image appearing on the main page instead of the intended picture. I hope this explains the protection. --KFP (talk | contribs) 13:38, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

American Buffalo Gold Coin

Someone e-mailed me this link via that email this user link in relation to the image debate I was in: http://www.usmint.gov/consumer/index.cfm?action=CircCoinPolicy

Aside from the page violating condition #4, the first paragraph does not specificlly mention that the American Buffalo Gold Coin is a "covered coin". Would this effectively null the FP stsus of the image or does this need further debate?--293.xx.xxx.xx 11:34, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi! The result of the deletion discussion (part of which is at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/delist/American Buffalo Gold Coin) was "Kept. Near identical replica of a PD work (PD old from 1916) is still PD. No indication of a copyright renewal or any other indication of a copyright." Do you have new information on this? --KFP (talk | contribs) 12:00, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

The United States Mint will not object to use of the obverse or reverse design of the Lincoln "Memorial Reverse" Cent, "Indian Head/Buffalo" Nickel, Pre-2004 Jefferson/Monticello Nickel, Winged Liberty/Mercury Dime, Roosevelt Dime, Pre-1999 Washington/Eagle Quarter-Dollar, Bicentennial Quarter-Dollar, Kennedy Half-Dollar, Kennedy Bicentennial Half-Dollar, Eisenhower Bicentennial Dollar or Susan B. Anthony Dollar coins (each, a "Covered Coin" and collectively, "Covered Coins"), subject to the following conditions:

...

*PLEASE NOTE: This policy does not cover use of the design of any coin not specifically defined above as a Covered Coin. For example, it does not cover the Golden Dollar coin featuring Sacagawea, or coins issued under the 50 State Quarters® Program (which has its own design use policy) or the Westward Journey Nickel Series™. It also does not cover the name or other trademarks of the United States Mint, nor does it cover publicity rights. It does not grant any waiver, release, or written permission of the Director under 18 U.S.C. § 709i or 31 U.S.C. § 333ii. By adopting and publishing this policy, the United States Mint is not waiving or abandoning any rights in designs assigned or licensed to it, and is not authorizing or supporting any acquisition or claim of exclusive rights (such as trademark rights) in coin designs. The United States Mint makes no warranty of any kind and expressly disclaims any and all implied warranties relating to coin designs. This policy does not confer any personal right or cause of action, and does not relieve any party from any other duty or obligation.

By the US Mints policy, while the Buffalo Nickel is okay, the Buffalo Gold Coin might be pushing it or outright breaking it. By chance, does Wikipedia have free Legal Services that might help clear this up?--293.xx.xxx.xx 05:12, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Can you please tell me how does one put his photo etc. on one's user page...? I mean all that licence thing...please give me details...Thanks Jon Ascton

Hi. To put an image on your user page, you have to upload the image via Special:Upload and release it under a free license. If you own the rights to the image, you can select a free license of your choosing from the "Licensing" drop-down list. Wikipedia uses the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL), and there are some other compatible licenses. See Wikipedia:Uploading images for more info and if you have further questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. --KFP (talk | contribs) 15:56, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

The box is in the "watchlist" section of Special:Preferences. If it is not checked, only the most recent revisions of the pages you are watching will be shown on your watchlist, i.e. one revision per page. Try it and you'll see the difference. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 11:04, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

The empty En-Wikipedia image page for this file was deleted per CSD I2 after the featured picture nomination was closed so it fell victim to this software bug then. Notability of Audio-Technica

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Audio-Technica, by RJASE1, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Audio-Technica seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Audio-Technica, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Audio-Technica itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 18:46, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

On archiving a talk page

Tervehdys KFP! You have helped me twice, the day before yesterday on the article in Suomen Kuvalehti and in April you gave me good advice about how to archive a talkpage. I am grateful for your help. But I must reveal my deplorable computer skills: I haven't been able to archive the talkpage in question. At present I am in the middle of writing the History of the Finnish Orthodox Church. After I have finished it, I hope to takle this formidable hurdle about archiving. I hope you have then time to guide me? By the way, KFP, may I ask you how long you have been in the "Wikiworld"?--Tellervo 20:13, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I know I have to learn how to archive a page, and I also want to do it in the long run, but this time, please, could you do it for me?? There is something missing in me, that makes
all kind of techniques seem complicated and foreign. As an example: I have never been able to learn how to drive! That's enough about me, - the page in question is the Cicero discussion page. Could you archive the talks up to Awadewit's copy edit? Cheers and thanks! Tellervo 16:13, 19 July 2007 (UTC) P.S.: Thank you for your kind appraisal of my work!

I am unsure how to classify this image, . It is a standard LOLCat image that I use on my userpage (via a contents page). Ownership of these images is almost always impossible to determine, which is why I originally tagged it as Non-free unsure. It was tagged for deletion as being in possible violation of Creative Commons. Since it is a common image, I tagged it as such. Still, it was tagged for deletion and retagged Non-free unsure and I am back to confused.

If you know what an LOLCat image would be classified under, template-wise, please let me know, I would greatly appericate it, because I like the little dude and I think that is all of us one time or another after a long night of editing. In trouble again

Hi! As you know I am writing at present the history of the Finnish Orthodox Church. I happen tohave some nice pictures of buildings and persons related to the Orthodox Church (as I am formally a member of it). I asked a friend of mine to put the picture of an old icon depicting St. Sergius and St. Herman of Valaam, in the article. My friend has never earlier done this and he is as totally ignorant, as I am, about Wikimedia Commons and of the process of putting a picture into an article. I have some 10-20 years ago cut the picture of the icon in question from some brochure, ( which one, I have totally forgotten ), about Valaam monastery. The icon is probably painted in the 19th century or early 20th century because of the fact that it is painted in the "degenerate" style i.e. a style that stopped around WW II. In that style icon painters tried to paint according to the rules of ordinary paintings. The picture was there for two days, and vanished there-after. When I click on the empty place where the picture used to be, I get just frightened by all the orders and demands put on me. By the way, I had to open an account in Wikimedia Commons in order to get the picture placed in the article. I use in Commons the same pseudonym as in Wikipedia. As to copyrights, icons arenever signed.

Well, what shall I do? I feel I am pretty troublesome and a burden to you. Lastly: - Thank you for the archive! Tellervo 09:48, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

The image you uploaded is at Commons:Image:Icon valaam monastery 19th century.PNG. You had misspelled the link with a capital V. -- Petri Krohn 22:50, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Horse skeleton image

Man do I hate to rain on the parade of an attractive image, but Have you looked CLOSELY at that skeleton diagramImage:Horseanatomy.png? I noticed that it has some SERIOUS inaccuracies (like mislabeling the sacrum as part of the lumbar and coccygeal vertebrae and saying that the horse has a collar bone when it doesn't!) It needs some relabeling and fixing. It's almost so bad we should consider removing it if we can't fix it, which is a real bummer because it's so clear... YIKES!!!! A couple examples that are more correct: http://www.horseracinghistory.co.uk/hrho/images/education/horse_skeleton.gif and http://www.classicbloodstock.com.au/skillsEDIT/clientuploads/39/horseskeleton.jpg Some of the terms aren't identical (cannon bone is either the metacarpal or metatarsal, etc.) but they are all correct. You may want to consult User:Dlh-stablelights on this, he is a vet. Montanabw(talk) 04:41, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Finger Jousting Page Deleted

I understand Wikipedia's need to be self-governed by directors and for information to be verifiable. However, by deleting the upcoming, growing, and independent, Wikipedia is subjugating anything new and not allowing progress. The finger jousting page was not an advertising or spam attempt at gaining some hits. I did not start that entry or even really work on it. That entry was made by fans of the sport. When the people discussing the entry prior to you deleting were discussing sources, you didn't even bother to look on the WFJF's Media Coverage page: http://www.fingerjoust.com/media/coverage.htm. Those are all good sources and are well documented. We have radio spotlights, podcasts, newspapers, television, and all that. Just because the sport is new and rather smallish now, does not mean it should not be in the Wikipedia. We're a bonafide organization just like the sport which has been around for about thirty years in different forms. The sport is quite well known just by different places around the United States and Great Britain. We're philanthropic and just made a donation to the local Muscular Dystrophy Association chapter. I understand that you all will probably stand by your decision (even though the discussion in the deletion page was split), I believe the deletion was uncalled for and a well done refurbishing of the webpage would have been well deserved. After the sport continues to grow in prominence this year, I think you guys will realize that you should have just left the entry in instead of having to go make a new one eventually. Thank you for your time. - The Lord of the Joust

Hello. I did not actually delete this article and I am not familiar with the situation. The deletion nomination was closed by User:Jaranda (I only deleted a related broken redirect). You can recreate the article now or later if you can address the concerns raised during the discussion. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 14:35, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Help! Please!!

Can you help me to make the template Template:WikiProject Bangladesh/back to main page a bit smaller? I have used it on Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh/History Workgroup and Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh/Geography Workgroup, and is looking otherwise nice, I guess. But, it tends to overlap with the page title on smaller screens. Aditya(talkcontribs) 17:34, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I made it a little smaller. Ask away if you want other changes to be done to it... And sorry about not getting back to you on Wikipedia:WikiProject Bangladesh/History Workgroup/Announcements, I wasn't quite sure what to do with it and then forgot it. I'll try to look. --KFP (talk | contribs) 18:21, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
Is it possible to make the box itself a bit smaller, especially in width? You see, it is the box that overlaps page title, not what is within the box. I have tried an failed. Thanks for your help, though. Aditya(talkcontribs) 04:26, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I know we are busy and all that. But, could you take a look at the template just once more in light of the comment immediately above? I really have a very lousy grip on the codes here. Aditya(talkcontribs) 04:04, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I think Gracenotes has fixed it now. --KFP (talk | contribs) 22:22, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Thank you KFP!

If only you knew how happy you made me by telling me sometime in July: "Keep up the good work!" That has been a wonderful boost to me, keeping me in this "Wikiworld" where you are often treated coldly and contemptuously, not to speak of all the rivalry. Btw. I wonder is it hard to be an admin? --Tellervo 14:02, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi there and sorry for the delayed reply. Thank you for your kind message! Adminship is mostly about common sense, civility and a sufficient understanding of Wikipedia's goals, policies and processes. (You don't have to know everything!) Its hardness mostly depends on the things you choose to do with the admin tools and how you use them. Ask away if you have any further questions. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 19:55, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Order4.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Order4.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 07:04, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

More questions

Nice to get your answer about adminship! I know admins have some special tools for their job, but I know nothing more about them. What kind of a bucket & so on? I am not aiming foradminship, so a general description is quite enough. Are you studying or teaching engineering??

This time I should like to ask you for a tutorial about how to put images into an article. In Wikimedia Commons there is a nice picture of the interior of the Uspenski Cathedral ("Altar-raum Uspenski Cathedral in Helsinki"). I think it would look nice in the article about the Finnish Orthodox Church, as a tunnelmakuva somewhere lower after that pretty uninspiring but quite informing piece about the dioceses of Finland. I have dabbled in trying to get it up to Wikipedia, but just ended up realizing it is too though stuff for me.

The other picture I should like to put into Wikipedia is a picture of Marshal C.G.E. Mannerheimin his youth as a Russian officer in the Chevalier Guard. I happen to have a good one in Veijo Meri's biography on him (Suomen Marsalkka C.G. Mannerheim, 1990). The picture is ofcourse over70 years old, but is there some other limitations for using it? ( One "limitation" might be thepatriotic flavour of the article, - other editors may dislike to be reminded of his years in the Russian army and his loyalty to the Romanovs.) Hoping you are well and content with your life! --Tellervo 17:58, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Caption goes here.
Hello again. Admin tools mostly have to do with keeping Wikipedia clean and dealing with user conduct issues. The tools most often used are deletion and undeletion, blocking and unblocking and page protection and unprotection. Deletion is for pages that Wikipedia is for one reason or another better off without, blocking is to protect Wikipedia and its users from disruptive editors and page protection is mostly for dealing with certain types of vandalism or edit warring. Admins can also view deleted pages and images without undeleting them and edit the MediaWiki namespace to change the site interface and such. There are some other, less commonly used tools as well and some that require a different access level.
As for images, the simplest way is to type

to the place in the article where you want the image to appear. In this case "Image:Example.png" is the file name and "Caption goes here." is the caption of the image. This will produce the image shown on the right.
If the Mannerheim image is in the public domain or freely licensed, you are free to upload it on Wikipedia using the "Upload file" link in the toolbox on the left or at Wikimedia Commons. I hope this helps... And no, I'm not studying or teaching engineering. I do study business related things, though. --KFP (talk | contribs) 17:01, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
Hello KFP! Thank you for the instruction on how to put an image in the article! If you have time, please, visit "History of the Finnish Orthodox Church" and tell me what went wrong with the "tunnelmakuva" from the Uspensky Cathedral? Greetings! --Tellervo 11:21, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Hi, there is a typographical error in the filename on Wikimedia Commons. It says "uspenki" when it should be "uspenski". I changed the Wikipedia page to reflect this mistyping. It is also possible to reupload the file under a new filename. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 18:58, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Thank you again KFP! What a curious error in Wikimedia Commons! Btw do you know a good copy editor? Cheers! --Tellervo 09:37, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
I don't need a copy editor, as things have taken an different turn.--Tellervo 16:42, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Help

In the past I received wonderful help from you on coding, and that wasn't always directly related to the project itself. I am turning to you again for help with something that relates to my userspace. I have a chart on my homapage here, under the heading "I ♥ the smell of napalm in the morning", that describes which superhero I resemble. The whole idea is copied from another Wikipedian. But, I can't get the chart to integrate with the page. I put it in one place, and it shows up in another, and in the process italicizes some text uselessly. It also refuses to become smaller. I would have redone the chart if I knew how. Can you do something about it? No matter how small, it will be most appreciated. Please? Aditya(talkcontribs) 16:55, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. It already gives me a good feeling to think that you cared enough to take a look. Well... I have put the codes for the chart where I want it to appear (on the right side just below the section "I love the smell of napalm in the morning"). If you open the section you'll see the codes sitting there. But, I guess, it's written in HTML and isn't fitting into the Wikicode world. Any layout would be fine, as long the bar chart remains a bar chart (with percentage labels), and the rest of the information doesn't vanish (including the link). Would you believe that I couldn't figure even that little? Aditya(talkcontribs) 16:01, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I hoped I would have forgot all about it by now. I tried to fiddle with the codes a bit myself, eventually gave up, removing it completely. I was nice and funny. But, I think I have a better idea for the home page, as in more directly related to the Wikipedia. And, I am so very honored that you went back to the page to lend a hand. Thanks, dear, really. Help Please

Hi KFP,
I was under the impression that I'd blocked User:213.48.73.89 but it seems that he can still edit (or is it that he can only edit his talkpage?). Could you please explain? ( Sorry for the noob question - my first block ;))Thanks, --Fir0002 09:25, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey Fir0002! Yes, the block should be working just fine but blocked users can still edit their own talk pages (so they can request unblocking) unless they are protected. Said talk pages can be protected in case of abuse. Congratulations on your first block! And it only took you about a year and a half of being an admin to get around to it! :p --KFP (talk | contribs) 18:35, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Spotlight, a page you created, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Spotlight and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Wikipedia:Spotlight during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you.

I was about to join the project, because it seemed to be well organized. But as I see it as pretty inactive at the moment, and WP:ACID is almost similar to the spotlight, that's the main reason why I nominated this up for discussion. ~Iceshark7 (talk) 18:58, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for blocking this user for Spamdexing. Checking the edit history of the five articles he spammed I noted identical spamming to the very same articles from user:58.187.22.214 had been reverted a few hours earlier this morning. I suspect it may be the same user, as those 5 spamming edits are the only edits on that IP account. Would it be worth blocking it as a spamming account. Help with the project banner for Wikiproject Bangladesh

Template:WP Bangladesh, the project banner, unrolls a set of edit instructions. If you put "stub" as the class parameter and "yes" as the geography parameter it comes out. The instructions used to be very cumbersome (and, after my dabbling, looks silly). You can take a look at it on Talk:Bagherpara Upazila. I was trying to get a collapsible set of instructions like Template:Film. Unfortunately, that one doesn't have any parameters to fill and comes always ready with the banner. Can you lend a hand there?

I haven't been able to learn the codes yet (I don't think I'll be learning ever, technologically handicapped as I am). Sorry to bother you again. But, I have no one else to turn to with these kind of problems. I hope you'd understand. If you are too busy or something, please, let me know. I'll just revert whatever I was trying to do. Aditya(talkcontribs) 10:49, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello... busy? I thought I'd post a re-request. As soon as this is fixed, I can start using the template. The ungainly size and all are preventing me from doing that right now (who'd prefer to find this ugly looking, or the previous ugly looking, large template, really). Aditya(talkcontribs) 00:22, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Happy New Year. It would be very nice if you could get someone who can fix it. I have a feeling that this good idea of a template may eventually have to go, because of its cumbersome looks. So much ugliness on the talk page may be demoralizing. Cheers. Aditya(talkcontribs) 17:58, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. It looks beautiful now. Aditya(talkcontribs) 19:23, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Missing image Image:High Resolution Solar Spectrum.jpg

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:High Resolution Solar Spectrum.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:High Resolution Solar Spectrum.jpg is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:High Resolution Solar Spectrum.jpg, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. User talk:Jlomcc

Hi, you recently fully protected this page. This does not allow the user to do as instructed by the admin whom conditional unblock to the user. It also prevents users such as myself guiding this user. I would ask you to reconsider the protection. Thanks, Tiddly-Tom 10:22, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. The user was blocked indefinitely for making no constructive edits to Wikipedia. After the block he continued to troll on his talk page. I can undo the protection for now but... Hmm. --KFP (talk | contribs) 19:24, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
He was also given a conditional unblock. Normal I would have not become involved, but recently I have assisted User:05kinjac to receive an unblock. He now is keen to learn policy and I think he will make a quality editor. I enjoyed helping kinjac, and hoped I could do the same for this user. I was a little annoyed when I found out that I couldn't, and that he could never be unblocked. I did not want a potentially good editor being scared away by this. I have left a message on his talk page and hopefully he will see it soon and want to start contributing constructively to wikipedia. If he continues to show no signs that he will change, I would not mind for the protection to be replaced. Thank you for your help in this matter, Tiddly-Tom 19:53, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Notability of IRC-Galleria

WP:WEB shows the criteria the article needs to meet. Until the proper sources are added to meet one of those, a claim is just a claim and not backed up. No editor can easily verify it off the article. Significant independent coverage by third parties or evidence of winning a notable award needs to be presented on the page. A claim of largest X, or X amount of users, sourced or otherwise, doesn't satisfy WP:WEB.--Crossmr (talk) 21:53, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Hmm... Perhaps. I don't know much about the site nor am I very interested in it. Perhaps someone else will dig up more reliable sources for it. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 22:18, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't know much about it either, which is why I tagged it. I simply came across it in my cleanup for the List of social networking websites.--Crossmr (talk) 22:36, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

This is a very venerable quip, for which I receive occasional compliments on my talk page. What exactly are your objections? I notice a huge and extremely ugly troll on your user page; is this an aesthetic statement of principles? Johnbod (talk) 20:17, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello! I'd like to see a caption that explains why this image is considered to be such a very exceptional example of high culture. Show, don't tell! And yes, the troll is quite impressive. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 20:48, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Meetup in Helsinki

Hi KFP!

I think I have unwittingly created a situation, where nobody dares to propose some nice pub orrestaurant with moderate prices and a relaxed atmosphere by suggesting Cafe´Strindberg and Fazer as meeting places. I am not at all stiff and elitistic, and I regret proposing those two, though I would not mind meeting in them. But I may be wrong, and the planned meetup has broken down out of other reasons. That is sad, asI would have liked to meet other editors. --Tellervo (talk) 08:26, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tellervo! Don't worry, they're good options, I haven't commented anything recently as I'm not sure about a possible date and such... If we look for a restaurant type setting for the meetup, something like Tori might be a good option and if it is to be something more pub-like, Kaisla or something similar might be good. But I don't know! There are dozens of options. :) --KFP (talk | contribs) 17:48, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi there! Please improve the ITN blurb on the detentions. Currently the blurb just essentially states that "two people were detained somewhere". Such things happen constantly (probably thousands of times every day) and the blurb doesn't really indicate why it is a notable event. Also, Wikipedia's coverage of it seems to be limited to one paragraph in the article MY Steve Irwin. I'm not really convinced that the U.S. politician thing is "ITN-worthy" either but I must say that the blurb for it makes a far clearer assertion of notability than this one. question...

I missed the afd for List_of_alleged_al-Qaeda_members.My notes contain lots of sources for who has been alleged to have been members of al-Qaeda, that comply with WP:BLP.

If you userified this list to User:Geo Swan/Review/List_of_alleged_al-Qaeda_members, and I pruned the ones without BLP-compliant references, and supplied BLP-compliant references for the remainder, would you agree that it would then be appropriate to move it back into article space?

If you userified it for me, would you want to look at it, and give it an endorsement, prior to moving it back to article space? Or do you think this would require a DRV?

Fair use rationale for File:Absoluuttinen_nollapiste_-_Seitsemäs_sinetti.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Absoluuttinen_nollapiste_-_Seitsemäs_sinetti.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. 2009 Espoo shopping mall shooting & Ibrahim Shkupolli Articles

Hello, KFP,
I just came over to the Espoo article when I found out someone was writng about the shooting here. I had edited 2009 Espoo shopping mall shooting a bit when I found there was another article Ibrahim Shkupolli on the suspect.
I thought they should be at least merged, and User:Piano non troppo has put notability tags on both of them. The suspect has apparently suicided so unless they find more bodies (6 so far), it seems to be the end of the affair, and the other articles may not be notable enough for retention. I was thinking maybe the Espoo article would now be the best place for the shooting to stay? ps. It's 'next year' where I am so happy New Year! (seems the suspects article has been redirected as I typed!) --220.101.28.25 (talk) 15:28, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

  • Hi there. Yes, one article should be enough. Happy new year to you, too! --KFP (talk | contribs) 15:26, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for getting back to me. My message is a bit out of date now :-), The article on Sello mall shooting as it is now called, came together fairly well, bit of vandalism and POV. Maybe in the long run it can be merged into Espoo. See you round as it is well past Wiki-sleep time for me! --220.101.28.25 (talk) 15:41, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

name dispute

There is a discussion going on whether the name of that German church body can be translated or not (it appears like this on the english pages of this church's homepage). One user changed the name of this Church (actually a federation of several Lutheran, United and Reformed churches) and it's regional member churches to the German form because he says their names can't get translated. so the article on the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria now appears under its German name because he says the "concept" can't be translated into English. Please go to the discusson page of the Evangelical Church in Germany and have your say --93.130.249.56 (talk) 02:05, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

What was the criteria for speedy? This was about the case, not the person. The person is Alix Bromley and I deliberately didn't do the article about her. Andrewjlockley (talk) 16:19, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Hi! Although the article was moved from the original title, I believe BLP concerns still apply, and we need much more substantial sources showing the actual notability of the subject of the article. I'm not willing to undelete the article, but if you want more opinions on the matter, I suggest you list the article at deletion review. --KFP (contact | edits) 20:55, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Epic boobs girl

Please can you respond to the outstanding issues, discussed on my profile, following your unwarranted and arbitrary deletion of this article. Thanks Andrewjlockley (talk) 14:20, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Hello. As I said, I believe WP:BLP applies even though the person was not named in the last revision(s) of the article (particularly as it appeared to be about a child). A single blog post (even if it's by a journalist affiliated with a major newspaper) is not enough in this type of case. Also, as I said earlier, you can request undeletion at deletion review. Some somewhat similar Internet memes that concern living people certainly do meet Wikipedia's policies for inclusion but this article does not, I think. --KFP (contact | edits) 23:25, 10 September 2010 (UTC)
Also, in case you didn't see it, the proposed deletion reason was "This article does not seem to be noteworthy. It reads like it sets a legal precedent. When in reality it is about a Press Complaints Commission ruling. The PCC being a regulatory body for British printed newspapers and magazines, and not a court of law. The "Implications of the case" section is nonsense too. The PCC ruling does not have any implications for future privacy cases since the PCC is not a court of law, and does not hear such privacy cases. If someone wanted to stop a newspaper printing some pictures then they would need a court injunction." This was not the reason for the deletion but you should probably take it into consideration when/if requesting an undeletion. Apart from that, the approach of the article to the issue seemed to be ok per se, but more substantial sourcing is definitely needed. --KFP (contact | edits) 23:43, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Happy 10/10/10

Double Ten Day is, really, unrelated—but we don't appear to have a cool pic for this one

I suppose I should've timed this message at 10:10:10 too, but frankly, I can't be arsed. You know how it is.

Did you know... that tenten in Japaense writing are a little wiggly thing, a bit like a quotation-mark, which makes e.g. "ka" (か) into "ga" (が) or "fu" (ふ) into "bu" (ぶ) ?

So, take time out to have a bit of a giggle.

All the best, and 10-10 'till we do it again.  Chzz  ►  08:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

William IV, III, and Wulgrin II (Of, D', De) Angoulême, Counts of Angoulême

OK, I spent some time on this as it pertains to a tree I am working on anyhow. the Counts list is off, by a few number, I have crossed the following references:

  • Histoire P@ssion

http://www.histoirepassion.eu/spip.php?article1072

  • Foundation for Medieval Genealogy

http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ANGOULEME.htm#_Toc220298849

  • Jaime Allen's Family Tree (aka FabPedigree)

http://fabpedigree.com/s040/f560584.htm

  • Google Books - (The) descent, name and arms of Borlase of Borlase in the county of Cornwall

http://books.google.com/books?id=5axpAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA13&dq=Counts+of+angouleme&hl=en&ei=D5a7TLXBLoOosAPX2IyyAQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=Counts%20of%20angouleme&f=false

Here is what I came up with for Counts (19 total)

  1. Count Of Angoulême (1st of Taillefer Branch) c866- c886, Vulgrin/Wulgrin (I),
  2. Count Of Angoulême (2nd of Taillefer Branch) c886- c916, Hilduin/Alduin/Audoin (I), son of Wulgrin (I)
  3. Count Of Angoulême (3rd of Taillefer Branch) c916- c945, William/Guillaume (II) aka William "Taillefer" I, son of Hilduin/Alduin/Audoin (I) [also first time Taellefer is used)
  4. Count Of Angoulême (4th of Taillefer Branch) c945- c950, Bernard (I), son of William (I), Grand-son of Wulgrin (I)
  5. Count Of Angoulême (5th of Taillefer Branch) c950- c962, William/Guillaume (III), son of Bernard (I)
  6. Count Of Angoulême (6th of Taillefer Branch) c962- c975, Ranulf/Ralph/Rudolf, Son of Bernard (I)
  7. Count Of Angoulême (7th of Taillefer Branch) c975- c975, Richard, son of Bernard (I)
  8. Count Of Angoulême (8th of Taillefer Branch) c975- c992, Arnold "Mancer", son of William/Guillaume (II)
  9. Count Of Angoulême (9th of Taillefer Branch) c992-c1028, William/Guillaume (IV) aka Willliam "Taillefer" II, son of Arnold "Mancer"
  10. Count Of Angoulême (10th of Taillefer Branch) c1028-c1030, Hilduin/Alduin/Audoin (II) aka Alduin "Taillefer", son of William/Guillaume (IV)
  11. Count Of Angoulême (11th of Taillefer Branch) c1030-c1048, Geoffroy, son of William/Guillaume (IV)
  12. Count Of Angoulême (12th of Taillefer Branch) c1048-c1087, Fulk/Foulques, son of Geoffroy
  13. Count Of Angoulême (13th of Taillefer Branch) c1087-c1120, William/Guillaume (V) aka Willliam "Taillefer" III, son of Fulk/Foulques
  14. Count Of Angoulême (14th of Taillefer Branch) c1120-c1140, Vulgrin/Wulgrin (II) aka Wulgrin "Taillefer" I, son of William/Guillaume (V)
  15. Count Of Angoulême (15th of Taillefer Branch) c1140-c1179, William/Guillaume (VI) aka Willliam "Taillefer" IV, son of Vulgrin/Wulgrin (II)
  16. Count Of Angoulême (16th of Taillefer Branch) c1179-c1181, Vulgrin/Wulgrin (III) aka Wulgrin "Taillefer" II, son of William/Guillaume (VI)
  17. Count Of Angoulême (17th of Taillefer Branch) c1181-c1186, William/Guillaume (VII) aka Willliam "Taillefer" V, son of William/Guillaume (VI)
  18. Count Of Angoulême (18th of Taillefer Branch) c1186-c1202, Aymer aka Aymer "Taillefer", son of William/Guillaume (VI)
  19. Countess Of Angoulême (19th of Taillefer Branch) c1202-c1220, Isabella aka Isabella "Taillefer", daughter of Aymer,
    1. Count Of Angoulême (1st Of The Lusignan Branch) c1220-cont, Hugh X (Of, De, D') Lusignan, Wife of above Isabella of Angoulême

not all the soures are in 100% agreement, but they are relatively close (some skip mminor holdings, other jilt the "count" around a bit). This is the best median ground barring a professional historian specializing in the time/families/titles getting involved.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.91.236.145 (talk) 08:15, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Signing my comment, now that I have a Wiki account, which is now also noted in the concerned pages talk page.Collision-Shift (talk) 02:40, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

  • Hi there Collision-Shift. Thanks for the research and welcome to Wikipedia! I recommend that you be bold and make the necessary changes to the list of counts.
To make the changes there, go to Counts and Dukes of Angoulême and click "edit" (if you click the edit tab in the upper right corner of the screen, the whole page will be shown in the editing text box, and if you click on an edit link for a specific section, only that section will be shown.)
The items in the list look like this in edit mode: *Wulgrin I (866–886), where the asterisk is the bullet and the text inside the double square brackets is the link to the Wikipedia article (in this link, the "Wulgrin I of Angoulême" part is the actual title of the page, and the "Wulgrin I" after the pipe symbol is the text that's displayed instead of the actual page title).
So, just fix the errors and/or unclear bits you found, and add the sources you used on the same line after the years inside tags; for example like this: *Wulgrin I (866–886)
If you used essentially the same sources for each count, you can just copy and paste the same citations for each list entry.
The footnotes will then automatically appear in the "Sources" section at the bottom of the article (there are already two non-inline sources in there now, one a website and the other a book).
To check if the edits are looking right, click the "Preview" button, and to save the changes for all to see, choose "Save" (and leave a little comment in the "Summary" field to describe what you're doing).
Also, if any of the counts' individual articles need changing, you can fix them in a similar fashion. If an article's title needs to be changed, let me know!
I hope this isn't too confusing, if you have any questions or need help with this, ask away on my talk page or the help desk or in the IRC channel! --KFP (contact | edits) 22:43, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
  • Take a look, updated, sourced, and referenced. figured multi-referenced sourcing kinda, Am gonna need some one with more power than me, as I will need to either changed Page titles, or ammend them. the page titles and links/redirects are still a bit skewed. some pages even show a correct "source" but the source contradicts the numbering of what the page maker claimed. Collision-Shift (talk) 19:49, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
      • Hi, looks good! Let me know when/if page moves or such are needed (I see you're discussing the issue with Srnec). --KFP (contact | edits) 23:08, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

  • Hi there. The way I see it, the article did not convincingly show the notability of the person in question. Also, the article's tone was clearly promotional (as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, biased articles cannot be accepted). Also, the article did not cite sufficient reliable, independent sources. If you think these issues can be addressed, feel free to resubmit an improved article. Wiki Guides study/project

Hi KFP!

After talking to you on IRC I wanted to drop the note about the study that we are getting together. As I’m sure you're aware we have had a decrease in new editors over the past couple years.

As a community we have a lot of ideas but We’ve been stymied by a lot of options and little data.

We want to conduct a study over the next couple months (with some resources from the Wikimedia Foundation) to help craft strategies to develop new users, to get data on exactly how our new users are finding their first, and later, experiences on Wikipedia and of course to help share the experiences of the experienced users who are here to find out what works, what doesn't and what resources they need to make their work easier.

The plan at the moment is to have several groups of users, 1 group that is just followed (the control) and several other groups with guides who actively reach out and try to help them edit and join the community. I hope that you can help us as we get ready for the study start next month and help the new users once we start! You can find out more information and sign up on the project page and if you can think of anyone who might be interested please please PLEASE point them this way or let me know so I can reach out to them personally. I'm hoping to try and get some discussion going on the talk page as well especially ideas on what you're new user experience was etc. Let me know if you have any question. IRC chat

Hello, there is an upcoming, very informal discussion on IRC on the freenode channel ##chzzalpha connect (quick webchat link) on the 6th March 2011 at 17:00 UTC concerning ways to improve help over IRC, and other matters relating to Wiki?edia channels in general, but mostly about #wikipedia-en-help.

This is just a friendly, informal chat. Nothing official, no fixed agenda. There is nothing 'secretive' about it - anyone is quite welcome. Some of you had a chat there, the other day. We wanted to invite them to carry on discussions, at a prearranged time - and thought it courteous to ask group contacts and channel founders too. Or if you signed up manually.

If you aren't at all interested, feel free to remove yourself from the names we've spammed this to, which is in User:123Hedgehog456/IRC informal chat users. If you didn't sign up, well, people have been adding loads of names to the list, so someone might have accidentally added your name.

May I ask for reasoning?

You reverted some information I had added in the article as not notable. I'd like you to correct me if I'm wrong, but as the incident has received plenty of media coverage, is it really not notable? Zakhalesh (talk) 04:06, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Also, compare it versus the other controversies incident, and see which one has received more attention. Zakhalesh (talk) 04:07, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Hi there Zakhalesh. Hmm, well, I thought the incident is not all that significant in the "big picture", just a relatively junior military officer indiscreetly mouthing off. Although it was covered by the media, there must be many hundreds, if not thousands of other newsworthy stories and incidents related to Halonen (she's been president for over ten years and prior to that, an MP and a minister), and to me, this incident doesn't seem be among the more important ones. As for other controversy, differences between her and the recent conservative governments should perhaps be pointed out. --KFP (contact | edits) 23:16, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

I am not an admin, so can obviously have no sense of ownership over a page that only admins can edit. Nevertheless, rather than personalise the issue on ITN/C, I would point out that, if you were a regular contributor at that discussion, you would be aware that those who are participants in debate over controversial inclusions/phrasings usually have the good grace to disbar themselves from making the call on that issue. Userfication of Hotforex

I'm curious why you userfied the article I deleted, HotForex, to User:Alvarezdie/HotForex. Does that account have some relationship with User:Stan hotforex, the author of the deleted article? I don't see a request to change username, and that new account has no edits. Please enlighten me. ~Amatulić (talk) 00:52, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi there Amatulić. It is the same user, they came on the WP:IRC help channel asking about how to improve/resubmit that page, and I asked them to create a new username because the old one appeared to represent the company (which is against the username policy). --KFP (contact | edits) 03:48, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Wouldn't it have been simpler for him to rename the account?
I declined the UAA report on this username because it isn't actually against policy, and we have precedent for others. The name "Stan" represents only one person (not an organization) as required by policy, while "hotforex" discloses a company association. That's OK. We have had other cases like that (I remember one from a major pharmaceutical company who appended his company name to his username for the explicit purpose of disclosing a COI, explained it clearly on his talk page, and conducted himself in a constructive and cooperative manner with respect to his articles of interest).
In any case, it may be prudent to redirect the old userpage and talk page to the new account. ~Amatulić (talk) 20:44, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Hi. Hmm, I don't think company user names are good even when they're more individual, as they are still promotional and overall frowned upon. The "disclosing COI" part is complicated and a systemic problem on Wikipedia (I know we have thousands upon thousands of editors who edit articles on subjects they're affiliated with. Some do it without a COI and others don't, and since we can't know which editor has which affiliations, we have to focus on the actual edits and content.) However, a username change might've been a better option than a new account admittedly. To be honest, in this case I'm not sure if the user is going to be working on the draft since they couldn't think of proper reliable sources for the article during the IRC discussion. (If they don't, the userfied page can be deleted if it remains untouched for some time.) --KFP (contact | edits) 15:37, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Oops, I just wasted my last 15mins adjusting this page, which was posted by the artist's son, and I found when browsing in preparation for a new entry I wish to post soon. Too bad... While editing, I too realized it was just a paste from The Guardian obituary and was wondering... Incredible synchronicity! Ciao --Daubmir (talk) 21:22, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

BITEy

Hi, I'm sorry if my comment at Talk:The Doctor's Wife (Doctor Who) came over as BITEy but it just struck me as a supreme chutzpah for someone to turn up at the talkpage, flash a load of credentials and leave an instruction list for other editors to deal with, many of the points on which were completely untenable. ╟─TreasuryTagballotbox─╢ 20:31, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

  • Hi. I understand what you mean, but still, the response seemed a more or less bitey to me, as I'm sure Invincor's talk page post was made in good faith (and rightly on the talk page, not introducing any OR in the article itself). --KFP (contact | edits) 20:37, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

The ways of the wiki can be a bit confusing at first (and occasionally later, too). Our help pages are a bit of a disorganized mess in many parts at the moment but we're (slowly) working on improving them! --KFP (contact | edits) 12:47, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

And in the future, I should just add to this topic, or should I create a new one at the bottom? Aslo, can I contact you by editing my talk page? Skeletonmandan (talk) 12:54, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

You can add under this section for now, but when I archive this at some point, a new section will be needed. I'm more likely to notice if you post on this page instead of your own (the orange box shows up). --KFP (contact | edits) 13:11, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

WikiAfrica

Hi KFP - just picked up your message on my page. you are right, it was me in the chat room. I had to leave unexpectedly. I wanted to clarify the position of WikiAfrica. WikiAfrica has different goals to WikiProject Africa, in that our project focuses on getting external Africa-based, cultural organisations, museums and archives, as well as bloggers and journalists, to contribute their knowledge to Wikipedia. A lot of these people have the knowledge, but for a variety of reasons are either unable or unwilling to navigate Wikipedia. To achieve what we want to, we need to find the articles that need the most help and to organise them so it is as easy as possible for anyone new. WikiAfrica has now been active since 2007 (on both the Italian and French sites) and, with us on board, the English side is gaining more momentum as you can see from the WikiAfrica project page. This project obviously works in conjunction with other Africa-based projects inside Wikipedia, but we are not and cannot be the WikiProject Africa project. Does this help? Also, i have checked both WikiProject Africa and the Africa Portal and neither of them have a category for African poet stubs. So your help in cross referencing African poets with stubs would help us all. Please help. Islahaddow (talk) 18:20, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Hmm. You could use the WP:CATSCAN tools to look for category intersections. Here's a sample looking for articles that are both in the "Stub-Class Africa Articles" category and the "Stub-Class Poetry Articles" category: [9] (using the original, less powerful but simpler tool). This particular search has few hits but there must be many more useful intersections. Note also that stubs are categorized by article space (topical categorization) and also by talk space (WikiProject categorization), and the two don't match. There are also many unassessed articles that might or might not be stubs. --KFP (contact | edits) 21:37, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Diacritics

It appears that you may have misunderstood the definition of diacritics in the proposal. I indeed recognise that use of 'diacritics' above letters vary according to the language, and that certain letters which bear what are commonly referred to as 'diacritics' to be letters in their own right. As such, the term is used in its all-embracing definition. The proposal would therefore encourage Finnish names to be spelt properly. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 12:28, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Clerid beetle04.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:Clerid beetle04.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. WMF_Legal

I was surprised to see that you blocked User:WMF_Legal, an official role account of the Foundation, without a block notice... how about unblocking that one, unless there's something I don't know? I'm having trouble figuring out what the blockable offense was there - so I'm assuming you thought it was compromised. It was not. Thanks! Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 02:01, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

  • Hey. I found it suspicious that the only edit by the account was an IRC cloak request (why would a WMF role account need an IRC cloak?). The request edit's diff also looked like it was possibly a jab at the former WMF legal counsel. Didn't have time to post a proper block notice before I was notified on IRC that the account was legit. I've undone the block. Sorry for inconvenience! --KFP (contact - edits) 02:15, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Discussion on linking to streamed copies of albums

Wikipedia policy allows us to link to legal streamed copies of albums. It would be useful to draw up a guideline on how and when to link to such albums; however, there is concern that it may not be appropriate as the music would not be available in all parts of the world. Is the benefit of having access to the music for most users outweighed by the fact that some users will follow a link to find the music is not playable in their region? Your view would be helpful at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums. SilkTork ✔Tea time 02:24, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of LOUD Technologies

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on LOUD Technologies requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 20:07, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

  • Hi. I agree the article isn't great (I posted the original short stub six years ago when times were very different but haven't touched the article since, other than to add an infobox two years ago). However, I'd say that being the parent company of seven individually notable musical instrument / professional audio companies is an implicit assertion of notability. Anyway, I don't have the time to fix the article, so go ahead and delete if you think it helps the encyclopedia. --KFP (contact - edits) 20:47, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Misguiding page about HotForex

Hello KFP. When going through the wikipedia posts about HotForex, Its been found that there was a page with this name and later on the page was moved, by you, to the corresponding "user/" directory but its still there and live and keeps coming up in search engine results. The page content is misleading and the logo as well(request you may cross check). This is causing great trouble and misleading people who come looking for genuine information about the company and end up gathering wrong information instead. The page being referred is this: User:Alvarezdie/HotForex. Requesting you to clear up the page from the user section and help the potential Wikipedia users get genuine and completely unbiased information. Thanks for your time. Hi,

As with the previous comment, do you mind unprotecting the following templates? None of their transclusion counts (which are mostly in the double digits or in the low hundreds) are anywhere near the threshold at which we'd normally consider full protection:

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, KFP. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi KFP.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for May 17

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Helsinki Stock Exchange, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Raute (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Unsourced since 2010. No reliable sources found.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Fifteen Years of Adminship!

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:08, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Re Virgin Spring

Wikipedia's definition of rape and revenge film is irrelevant because Wikipedia is not an RS. If you want to change the genre to period drama I'm perfectly OK with that. Just don't remove the genre completely. Ribbet32 (talk) 18:28, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
