Yes, exactly this way. Some users however may choose to reply on their own page in order to keep the conversation (if there is one) intact on one page so you may want to put that user on your watchlist. In the case of this question I'm going to answer on my page and then copy the whole thing to your page which is another way that you might encounter or want to do for whatever reason. I very rarely find a need to do this - just showing you how. Also, it's a good idea to put something in the edit summary even if only a word or two.

Generally {{helpme}} is to be used with building the encyclopedia (not userpages etc) but I can see you are working on something interesting there.

Place <br clear="all" /> directly above a section header will stop stuff overslapping - have a play with it.

To work on an aritcle in your userspace you can do so on a user subpage. Eg just start User:NorwegianBlue/Sandbox, or User:NorwegianBlue/Ksmrq etc.--Commander Keane 10:42, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:User page has some guidance on what content you can have in your user space. I think the reference desk info would be fine (I acutally have something similar), as long as you don't start turning Wikipedia into your personal webserver.

Hello, NorwegianBlue. Thank you for the feedback. No matter how hard we try, and no matter how noble our intentions may be, there is almost always a better way. If I didn’t understand that before I became a Wikipedian, I certainly do now. I think your suggested response to Luke’s post is a very good one, and I would certainly adopt it in future.

The nature of a wiki means that editing others’ posts (other than in articles, of course) cannot be absolutely forbidden, but it’s generally frowned upon unless there’s a good reason. Removing emails is a good reason. Formatting to remove large areas of white space is a good reason. Making incomprehensible English comprehensible might be a good reason, but that’s also tricky because it depends on the assumed meaning of the post being the same as the meaning intended by the poster, which cannot be known with certainty unless questions are asked, and answered. So most people prefer to ask what they meant rather than just change it to what they think they meant. In Luke’s case, it was quite clear (to me at least) what he meant. My issue was with the total lack of punctuation, which made it much harder to read than it needed to be. If the tone of my response seemed unnecessarily judgmental, that’s a lesson I need to take heed of.

This is a very common problem with a communication forum that uses words alone, without any of the body language and facial gestures that give human communications the vast majority of their meaning. Although it wasn’t relevant in this case, the most difficult thing to express in a wiki environment is humour. If the speaker prefers to let their humour be subtle or dry (as I do) rather than “in your face”, they have to be prepared to be occasionally misunderstood and inappropriately taken to task. I’ve been down that road more than once as the recipient of such criticism, and I’ve also been the “perpetrator” (where I’ve failed to see the intended humour in another person’s post, and got all righteous about it). That’s where the assume good faith policy comes in. But that good faith policy doesn't mean dropping our standards.

There’s also the question of political correctness, which your question touched on ("Luke might be a very young person, or have a reading/writing disability, and the question could be the result of hard work.") That may very well be true. We certainly don’t want to discourage young people from coming here. And not everyone is fortunate enough to have had as much language training as other people have. I guess I get frustrated at what I see as the dumbing down of language these days. Mobile/cell phones have brought enormous change to how people operate in their daily lives, much of it very good, but text messaging (SMS) has had a huge negative impact on how written language is abbreviated because those habits spill over to other places where they’re inappropriate. All you need to make a good paragraph pretty unreadable is to dispense with capitals, full stops and commas, and insert a small number of spelling errors for good luck. That’s all Luke did, it wasn’t a hanging offence - which is why it wasn’t a huge task to put them back where they belonged. Those small changes made a large difference to the readability of the para. The message I was trying to convey to him was that it was open to him to make those changes himself, rather than leaving it for somebody else to do. What does this have to do with PC? Well, without specific knowledge of a person’s circumstances, I think it’s going too far to try to work out what could possibly explain a poorly punctuated sentence, and then assume that's the case, and by our silence make it seem OK. (I have a similar issue with a lot of redirects, that undermine our language by enabling people to search using a grossly misspelled word and they get taken straight to the relevant page without ever being made aware they have just committed linguistic murder. This is doing a serious disservice to our language.) Maybe Luke does have a learning difficulty. But my preference is not to assume that. I’d rather assume he’s had the “benefit” of modern educational philosophy. It’s not his fault, it’s the fault of our educators. But he still needs to hear that this outcome is not entirely acceptable. If he worked in an office where he had to write letters to customers, he’d soon find out what English standards were expected, or he’d be out of a job. Maybe I’m just an old duffer who thinks that standards still count when in it comes to writing English. Maybe I’m out of step. Who knows? It seems that the blood type MCOTW has come at a bad time for the both of us. I'm going on a month long vacation without the internet at the end of this week. There is a chance that things won't change while we're gone (MCOTW does not promise much improvement!) but if it is not already a featured article, then I propose that we make it so (with help, of course!). I had copied the list of antigens from what had previously been on the page without checking for veracity, so that explains the errors. I will look to find the appropriate nomenclature - I didn't break out my Wintrobe's last night because I thought that pubmed would be enough. I was looking at several articles and haven't seen the subscript notation for K1/K2, though I have seen K₀ more than Kell-null. The one place that it showed up was the hemolytic disease of the newborn page for the Kell antigen created by snowmanradio. First, I would like to thank you for your work on the maths reference desk. I've read the refdesk regularly for about a year, and am deeply impressed with the way you respond to questions, whether they be on elementary or advanced topics, always with the same patience and insight. A tiny number of questions have been mine, such as this one. Thank you!

Second, I would like to ask your advice about selecting a computer algebra system. I remember your having stated in passing that you used a CAS when arriving at a certain conclusion, and I also believe that you once said that you were a supporter of free software (I'm certain about the first statement, not 100% certain about the second one). I've read the CAS article, and am aware that there are several open source computer algebra systems.

Some background: I'm certainly no mathematician, but from time to time, mostly for the fun of it, do some algebra. Having a CAS available might to help me from doing silly mistakes, and from spending a lot of time in spotting them. Right now, I'm trying to gain a little more insight into mathematical statistics, involving the need of both symbolic and numerical integration. I had access to Maple some time ago, and have also used a trial version of MuPad. Both programs would fit the bill, but I'm looking for a free, open source alternative. For plotting, simulations and computations, I use R. I would greatly appreciate your opinion about whether there are open source alternatives that could be useful to me, and if so, where to start. I am an enthusiastic user of computer algebra systems. The landmark original Macsyma system (not the current commercial one) evolved at the MIT AI Lab, which is also where Richard Stallman and the "hacker mentality" of free software began. So, despite the high-priced efforts of Wolfram and Mathematica, CAS and open source are a natural combination.

One interesting effort you might like to explore is SAGE: Software for Algebra and Geometry Experimentation. You can find a home page at http://sage.math.washington.edu/sage/, and download versions for XP and Linux. I'm rather surprised the English Wikipedia has an article on Bardufoss. I expect Troms0 - it was a rather large city compared to Bardufoss. Yes, I was on the air base. Technically, I was on top of a mountain above the air base fixing a radar system. But, I finished my work in 2 days instead of the allotted 21 days. So, I had a lot of time to spend with the locals (in Bardufoss). Since we don't get Norwegian television or movies here to warp our view of Norway, my entire view is based on two weeks in a tiny town in northern Norway in February. I loved everything except the complete inability to get a real pizza (I even tried to get them to let me make it myself). I also got one of my favorite quotes ever. I asked a woman in a bar why the Norwegian words are so long. She replied, "We have so much time to talk and there's only so many ways to complain about the cold." Hehe. People from the north of Norway do have a good sense of humour (and an amazing vocabulary and imagination when swearing). The truth about word length is more boring. Norwegian words are long because compound words are written without a space, as in "chicken liver" -> "kyllinglever". Nowadays, there is a tendency among young people towards writing compound nouns separately, probably driven by the limited capabilities of the spellcheckers of cellphones and word processors. This leads to stuff like "stekt kyllinglever" (fried chicken liver) being written "stekt kylling lever" (fried chicken [still] alive).

The song isn't Norwegian, it is Swedish, and written by Evert Taube. The title is "Som stjärnor små" (like little stars). You'll find lyrics here. In the lyrics that I linked to, repetitions are omitted. In line 3, the lyrics that I've found on the web (various sites agree) say "de vinka til varann" (they wave at each other), whereas in the audio you provided, what is sung is "de blinka til varann" (they blink at each other). --NorwegianBlue ^talk 13:15, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. I remembered your previous question Track listing of a Norwegian Album, and googled based on the tags in the mp3 file. This turned up: http://www.maniadb.com/album.asp?a=110455. Since the song you now asked about was from the same album you asked about previously, and one of those that I was unable to locate, I suspect you too have found the track listing. This is a very wishy-washy post. I can make the argument that it isn't a request for medical advice because there is not request. It is nothing more than a rant. Since there isn't a question, it is up to the reader to make up the question. If the reader decides the question is "What can I do to stop getting cavities on my teeth?", then it is clearly a request for medical advice. If the reader decides the question is "Is there something that any person can do to stop getting cavities on his or her teeth?", then it is a request for medical information, not medical advice. In the end, you will have people arguing over different questions. So, before asking if it is a request for medical advice, everyone must agree on the question. -- kainaw™ 19:12, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree, it's a rant, a statement of opinion, and it doesn't end in a question mark. Still, I feel there's an implicit question, Why has no-one come up with such a preventive treatment. What experiments are you talking about? That Emperordarius user is indefinitely blocked for abusing sock puppet accounts and the templates are accurate. The other person is blocked, try looking at their talk page where they make an unblock request that is denied as they are a SOCKPUPPET. Please try to look a little bit at what people do and consider why they may do them instead of just jumping at the first thing you see on "recent edits". The article, to be frank, has no merit. The only indisputable fact it contains is that there is a place in Mexico called Altos de Jalisco. Use some common sense man, I was doing wikipedia a favor. I recommend having the article state simply that Altos de Jalisco is a highland region located the Mexican State of Jalisco; that it was founded by Spaniards in the 16h century, and that it's population is predominately mestizo, as is the majority of the population of Mexico. If that was the case other songs on here would have to be removed as they are not Swedish Artists These songs have hit Number One in Sweden. I created this page and other pages for years to go with them. I am in the process of working my way back to 1975. All information is correct and verifiable. Well I reverted because the deletion of information was incorrect. I just think that before removing this information you should have checked and verified your interpretation of the page before making any edits like that to save any misunderstanding. If you had looked at the page you would have noticed other Non-Swedish artists on there such as "Lady Gaga". Not sure if it was just a language difference that cause this confusion or not. All the pages I have created so far do have an intro and do have the verifiable sources which are mentioned in the intro and are linked to the archive at the bottom of the page. Noticed that the name of the page has been changed also. The original name was in line with the names of other countries such as Switzerland. But I noticed this has been changed as well. Nice to chat with you. I just wish that before you had edited the page that you would have written to me and questioned me first. It would have saved a lot of trouble. Thanks for your time. Alright, here some preliminar points: The most faithful translation of the idiom "make ends meet" is "llegar a fin de mes". Of course there are other (less direct) possible choices, such as "ayudar a las endebles finanzas familiares", "colaborar con las finanzas familiares", etc. But the first phrase is the best try.
I think that you use yours truly as a joking expression (derived from the valediction); that form can be kept in the Spanish version by using "su servidor", which takes verb forms of the third person. Hence, as a first try:

• "El trabajo infantil era común en la Noruega de los años 50. Aquí está su servidor trabajando como modelo de fotografía, ayudando a su familia a llegar a fin de mes".

Please notice the neccessary article before trabajo infantil. The wording of the Norway stuff has been changed a little, but your version is alright, except for the "'s" which is not used in Spanish; "los años 50" or "los años cincuentas" are two other possible choices.

Your "aquí estoy" is alright; I just used "su servidor" to keep the original jocular idea, as already noted.

The last part of the text is the most difficult to translate; a more faithful (if only a little longer) try would be:

• "Aquí está su servidor trabajando como modelo de fotografía, arreglándoselas para ayudar a su familia a llegar a fin de mes."

Hi again, NB! As a minor point, I apologyse if my method of answering talks differs from yours; maybe you wanted my answer directly to stand in my talk page. I understand many prefer this way, to keep the conversation more compact. ;)

As you point out, la is needed because countries get somewhat personified when restricted to a certain time period; "La Noruega de los años 50" is an entity, different from "la Noruega medieval". Plain Noruega just refers to the country (past or present), and no modifier such as de los años... can be attached to it. Your view is also correct in that the phrase you took for the Norway issue is somewhat drier, and mine more visual or romantic, if you want. Which you may prefer can of course vary with the occasion. I also like the visual version because it avoids doubling of prepositions (en... en..); this is not an issue here, but sometimes translating English text leaves you with an endless concatenation of "de...de...de.." that is really annoying. Hence, you start working out variants to avoid the series.

Your 50's is not a serious mistake, in the sense that many native speakers use the combination 's in such instances (maybe following English usage). Greetings! Pallida  Mors 21:13, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Of course they are. They are the three cosines which are applicable for the articles angular drawing. As I said, the Law of Cosines is plural, NOT singular. Therefore, there is more than ONE identy. All triangles have three Sines, three Cosines, and three Tangents. The same goes for their inverses too. Wikipedia's "Law of Sines" is correct (there are six identy ratios), but presently (11-02-09, 4:23PST) the "Law of Tangents" is very-very incomplete (there are six tangent identy ratios, NOT only one as is shown) ... P(disease|positive test result) can actually be pretty low. Suppose you have a population of 100 people, 99 of whom are disease-free: P(disease) = .01 . Suppose the test always comes out positive if the disease is present: P(positive test result|disease) = 1.0 , and suppose that the probability of a false positive is 1/33: P(disease|positive test result) = 32/33. Then if you test all 100 people, you get one true positive and 3 false positives (1/33 times 99 disease-free people), so there is one chance out of four that the positive test result means the person actually has the disease:

I start out with 10000 unselected individuals (assumed prevalence for RA 0.5%), then 1000 patients referred by their general practitioner to a rheumatology department (assumed prevalence for RA 5%), then 100 of these patients, who the rheumatologist evaluates to have a 50% pre-test probability of suffering from RA. In all three cases, there will be 50 RA patients in the sample, of whom 35 test positive. The context is allergy testing, but yes, I'm looking for broad categories. It's for a talk on a specialized topic within laboratory medicine. I am considering contrasting the list of "valid" or "legitimate" reasons, with the list given in this paper:

Perhaps it would be a good idea to have a space on every laboratory form in which the doctor had to state exactly why he had ordered a test. I believe if answers were honestly filled in we might get this sort of thing:

(1) I order this test because if it agrees with my opinion I will believe it, and if it does not I shall disbelieve it.

(2) I do not understand this test and am uncertain of the normal figure, but it is the fashion to order it.

(3) When my chief asks if you have done this or that test I like to say yes, so I order as many tests as I can to avoid being caught out.

(4) I have no clear idea what I am looking for, but in ordering this test I feel in a vague way (like Mr. Micawber) that something might turn up.

(5) I order this test because I want to convince the patient there is nothing wrong, and I don't think he will believe me without a test.

Hi, NB - I missed the rest of the festivities due to a prolonged power outage (guess where I am), but did like the article (if you cite it, of course, it will inevitably be pointed out that it is ancient; you can reply it's ancient wisdom). On the other hand, I'm fine with physicians having a free hand in ordering, even if they use it for self-abuse.... One final thought that might be worth voicing: the most flagrant occurrences of the phenomenon you describe occur, in my experience, when a practitioner is improvising at the limits of his expertise. He knows the test sounds pertinent, but is unsure—in the penumbra just beyond the perimeter of his knowledge—exactly what it might mean or how to interpret it. And I think some of this may happen when he is about to send the patient to a specialist, and wants to provide a more complete "package" for the specialist to review. And I think that the way the orderer gets the impression that the test is pertinent is that he recognizes a term in the title of the test (or its description) in the catalog of the laboratory he orders tests from. I often get calls from colleagues who have forgotten the difference between IgG and IgM (as evidenced by their test ordering) and have forgotten exactly what a titer is.

See Carrow_Road#Stadium.27s_name_and_initial_construction_history, a section of an article I'm trying to get to Featured status. It mentions, via a reference, a place called Kaaro in Norway. Does it exist? The reference is a Victorian publication, and these older works in English often have eccentricities when reproducing foreign words/names. So it might be Karro, or Kaarø or whatever. Double A is a vowel that was pronounced with a long A (/aː/) in Old Norse, that has shifted to [ɔ] ("awe") in Norwegian. The letter "Å" was officially introduced in Norwegian spelling in 1917. In given names and surnames, the double A is still to some extent used. If "Kaaro" is a Norwegian name, the modern spelling would be "Kåro", which does not sound like a Norwegian name to me, and has no sensible hits on Google maps, Yr.no (a weather forecasting site which provides forecasts for the tiniest of places) or official maps [3]. Replacing the "o" with "ø" makes sense and sounds like a Norwegian name, but searching the same sites for "Kårø" gives no exact hits. Since Norwegian surnames often are toponyms, I've checked if "Kårø" or "Kaarø" is a surname at Statistics Norway (https://www.ssb.no/en/befolkning/statistikker/navn link). Result: Fewer than four people or no one has the name Kårø (this is the same result that you would get searching for someone named "Qwertyxyz"). There are 7 with Kaarø as their surname. In the telephone directory I find ten persons with "Kaarø" as their surname or middle name. Several of these live in Trondheim, which could be a clue to where "Kaarø" is located. A google search for "Kårø" gives a couple of hits on genealogy sites, which indicate that the "Kårø" family name originates in Hemne, about 100 kilometers from Trondheim. I've found one person (with another name) who is a farmer with his business address listed as "Kårø", with a Google map link to Vinjeøra, in Hemne. (map link).

Cucumber Mike's suggestion of replacing the "ø" with "øy" is a good one, since "ø" is Danish and Riksmål for island, which in contemporary Norwegian (both Bokmål and Nynorsk) is spelled "øy". "Øya" is just the determinate form. Returning to official maps, a search for "Kårø" gives the following results, my translation of geographical features etc. in curly brackets:

The reasonable candidates are in my opinion Kårøyan (map link) (which could be identical to the "Kårø" farm I mentioned above, although the google map link is not quite right) and Cucumber Mike's suggestion Kårøya (map link). There is also a Swedish peninsula called Kårö (map link). That said, I think it is a bit of a stretch to assume that Carrow Road is named for any of these. The source says: If we agree to Norwich being a Scandinavian place-name, it is curious to notice that there is a place on the Norway Coast called Kaaro, which sounds like speculation to me. I would suggest changing the article text to The name "Carrow" originally refers to the former Carrow Abbey that once stood on the riverside, its name in turn having possible Norse origins [13], and omitting possibly related to Kaaro, Norway. --NorwegianBlue ^talk 11:14, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
