Mandela notably served 27 years in prison (promoting The Specials to release their hit single calling to Free Nelson Mandela), split between Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. After his release, Mandela became the first president of South Africa. Mandela was a controversial figure for much of his life. Although critics on the right denounced him as a communist terrorist and those on the far left deemed him too eager to negotiate and reconcile with apartheid's supporters, he gained international acclaim for his activism. Globally regarded as an icon of democracy and social justice, he received more than 250 honours, including the Nobel Peace Prize. He is held in deep respect within South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Thembu clan name, Madiba, and described as the "Father of the Nation". On 5 December 2013, Mandela died at the age of 95 after a prolonged respiratory infection. Reactions to his death from governments, international organizations, and notable individuals, gained worldwide media coverage. South Africa observed a national mourning period of 10 days. During this time numerous memorial services were conducted across the country. The official memorial service was held at FNB Stadium, Johannesburg, on 10 December where the 95,000-seat stadium was two-thirds full because of the cold, rain, and transport challenges. Mandela's body lay in state at the Union Buildings in Pretoria from 11 to 13 December 2013. A state funeral was held on 15 December 2013 in Qunu in the Eastern Cape, where his body was buried.
