Li estis unu el la originalaj sep trompindaj policanoj Keystone Kops de la Keystone Studios[1] Li reĝisoris Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle en 31 komediaj filmoj en Keystone Studios.

El 1908 al 1909, Avery aperis en 33 mallongaj filmoj sub la reĝisorado de D. W. Griffith, kutime nur en duarangaj roloj kaj ofte kun Mack Sennett.
