L'opera ripropone 21 racconti pubblicati tra il 1960 e il 1968. Il titolo originale della raccolta prende il nome dal breve racconto Nine Hundred Grandmothers (Novecento Nonne), pubblicato nel febbraio del 1966 sulla rivista If.[2][3]
Nel 1971 l'antologia ha ottenuto la nomination per il Premio Locus per la miglior Antologia nota nel '70 come Miglior Antologia/Collezione (Best Anthology/Collection)[N 1]
Storia editoriale
Nine Hundred Grandmothers è la prima antologia dello scrittore Lafferty.
In un'intervista condotta da Tom Jackson all'autore Lafferty, (stampata nel 39° numero della rivista di fantascienza Lan's Lantern nel 1991), lo scrittore racconta il grado di influenza, l'effetto avuto sulla scrittura e quanta voce aveva nella scelta delle storie che sarebbero state pubblicate l’autore Terry Carr, il quale aveva acquistato molti dei primi libri di Lafferty.[7]
«Terry Carr taught me that a story must begin with a bang ... Well, maybe all stories don't have to begin with a bang, but all Terry Carr storles had to begin with a bang of some sort. Terry also told me that 'You can lose a reader, completely and forever, in fifteen seconds. Never leave him even a fifteen-second interval without a hook to jerk him back.' Anything else Terry told me is contained in those two very good pieces of advice. On Nine Hundred Grandmothers, Terry gave me his preferences of the stories to go in the book, and asked me if I wanted to make any changes. They were all good stories, and I didn't make any changes.»
«Terry Carr mi ha insegnato che una storia deve iniziare con il botto ... Beh, forse tutte le storie non devono iniziare con il botto, ma tutti i magazzini di Terry Carr hanno dovuto iniziare con un botto di qualche tipo. Terry mi ha anche detto che "puoi perdere un lettore, completamente e per sempre, in quindici secondi. Non lasciarlo mai nemmeno per un intervallo di quindici secondi senza un modo per riprenderlo." Qualsiasi altra cosa che Terry mi ha detto è contenuta in quei due ottimi consigli. In Nine Hundred Grandmothers, Terry mi ha dato le sue preferenze sulle storie da inserire nel libro e mi ha chiesto se volevo apportare modifiche. Erano tutte belle storie e non ho apportato alcuna modifica.»
