Wikipedia:Top 25 Report/March 27 to April 2, 2016 China

Top 10 Most Viewed Articles on the CHINESE Wikipedia (zh.wikipedia.org) - March 27 to April 2, 2016

A Bonus From China: The new wmflabs TopViews project allows you to call up charts of the most popular articles on any language Wikipedia for different time frames. Though there is a caveat that it only counts days that articles are in the Top 1000 most viewed for a day in its numbers, this should not have much effect on the top portion of the chart.

Here are the Top 10 articles on the Chinese Wikipedia (zh.wikipedia.org) for the week of March 27 - April 2, 2016 -- matching the current Top 25. The primary source of readers of this Wikipedia are from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Note, however, that much of China may be blocked from access, see Chinese_Wikipedia#Blocking_of_Wikipedia, which will likely skew results to topics popular in Taiwan and Hong Kong, a combined population of slightly over 30 million compared to China's 1.36 billion residents.

Pop culture topics dominate the top 10, led by South Korean television series Descendants of the Sun, which is reportedly huge in China, and was #23 on the English Wikipedia for the same period. Two of the top actors from the show appear at #3 and #9. Other television shows abound in the list, with only Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (#6) penetrating from America.

RankArticleEnglishViewsImageNotes
1zh:太陽的後裔Descendants of the Sun422,486
#23 on the latest WP:TOP25 for the English Wikipedia. The Korean drama has been widely popular in Asia, including in China. The Korean version of the article had only 48K views last week compared to 382K in English, and the Chinese version had 422K views. The military theme of the series is part of its appeal in South Korea, and in China it's such a success that it has spawned tabloid reports "of a woman who nearly went blind binge-watching the show and another drama, when her 18-hour marathon session triggered acute glaucoma." Song Joong-ki (pictured) is a star of the show, to the chagrin of jealous husbands in China.
2zh:我是歌手 (第四季)Fourth season of I Am a Singer (Chinese TV series)243,134
Hwang Chi-yeul (pictured) is one of the contestants of the currently running fourth season of the Chinese reality show I Am a Singer. Though the English Wikipedia doesn't have articles on each season, it does have articles on every contestant from every season. The show originated in South Korea in 2011, and started in China in 2013. Most of the contestants are Chinese, though Chi-yeul this season is from South Korea, and Coco Lee is a Hong Kong-born singer who spent much of her youth in the United States.
3zh:宋仲基Song Joong-ki177,932
The South Korean actor who stars in #1.
4zh:Running ManRunning Man (TV series)172,189
A South Korean variety show also popular in Asia. Yoo Jae-suk (pictured) is among the cast, apparently often called "Yooruce Willis" in a joke reference to Bruce Willis.
5zh:EU超時任務Over Run Over140,857
A Hong Kong science fiction television series. The English Wikipedia articles says: "The show centers on a team of police officers who travel back in time to the same day to accomplish various missions." The cast includes actress Christine Kuo (the only primary cast member article I could find a picture for.)
6zh:蝙蝠俠對超人:正義曙光Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice130,214
The #1 article on English Wikipedia for this week. The film earned $57.2 million from approximately 16,000 screens in China on its opening weekend, its largest revenue market after the United States.
7zh:PRODUCE 101Produce 10191,048A reality girl group show on the South Korean network Mnet. The season finale was on April 1, resulting in the girl group I.O.I, who released their first song Crush on April 5. (Audio on YouTube: [1] )
8zh:後菜鳥的燦爛時代Refresh Man (no article)78,507A Taiwanese television show. Refresh Man is the official English title; Google translates the title to "After a brilliant rookie era."
9zh:宋慧喬Song Hye-kyo77,061
A South Korean actress who appears in #1.
10zh:翁啟惠Chi-Huey Wong75,016
A Taiwenese biochemist and head of Taiwan's Academia Sinica, in the news due to a possible insider trading scandal.

Exclusions (following the same rules we use on the WP:TOP25):

  • zh:哈里·S·杜鲁门 (Harry S. Truman) had the most views (584,986), but were ALL from a huge spike on one day, all from desktop views (not the normal mix of desktop and mobile views), so this is one we would always exclude from the WP:TOP25.
  • zh:马澄坤 (118,988) - (Google translates to Macheng Kun, apparently an executive with Oriental Press Group (a redlink on en.wiki), which publishes Oriental Daily News and other publications) - This article is getting a solid ~17,500 views every day without fail, but almost all from desktop views, so it is not legitimately this popular.
  • zh:馬惜珍家族 (118,869) - perhaps related to the above entry.
