The Stars and Stripes Forever
"The Stars and Stripes Forever" adalah lagu mars patriotik Amerika Serikat sekaligus magnum opus dari komponis John Philip Sousa. Lagu mars ini ditetapkan oleh Kongres sebagai Lagu Mars Nasional Amerika Serikat pada 11 Desember 1987.[1] Lagu mars ini sering dimainkan pada perayaan Hari Memorial, Hari Veteran, Hari Kemerdekaaan, dan kesempatan lainnya di Amerika Serikat.

Sejarah
Lagu mars patriotik ini tidak ditulis sesuai pertempuran hebat, melainkan di kapal pesiar samudra ketika Sousa dan istrinya dalam perjalanan pulang dari liburan di Eropa. Pada akhir 1896, Sousa dan istri sedang berada di tengah laut ketika mendengar berita bahwa David Blakely, manajer Sousa Band meninggal mendadak. Sousa segera harus pulang karena bandnya sudah dijadwalkan untuk melakukan tur lintas Amerika dalam waktu dekat.[2]
Menurut Sousa dalam autobiografi Marching Along,
Sousa tiba di New York City pada 25 November 1896, dan segera menulis draf lagu ini dengan pensil. Versi piano yang ditulisnya dengan tinta selesai pada Hari Natal 1896. Pada 27 Desember 1896, Sousa Band memulai tur keliling Amerika sehingga partitur band lengkap baru dapat diselesaikan Sousa pada 26 April 1897. Sousa bersama bandnya dijadwalkan tiba Philadelphia pada 15 Mei 1897, dan bermain pada hari berikutnya di di acara peresmian patung baru George Washington. Sebagai penghormatan atas kesempatan yang diberikan kepadanya, Sousa menjanjikan sebuah lagu mars baru.[3]
Lagu "The Stars and Stripes" langsung sukses. Sousa Band memainkannya pada hampir semua konser hingga Sousa meninggal dunia lebih dari 25 tahun kemudian.[2]
