Park Shin-hye

Park Shin-hye (Korean박신혜, born February 18, 1990) is a South Korean actress. She gained recognition as a child in television series Stairway to Heaven (2003) and Tree of Heaven (2006). In 2013, she starred in the film Miracle in Cell No. 7, which is one of the highest-grossing Korean films of all time. She is known for her roles in You're Beautiful (2009), The Heirs (2013), Pinocchio (2014–2015), Doctors (2016), Memories of the Alhambra (2018–2019), #Alive (2020), Sisyphus: The Myth (2021) and Doctor Slump (2024).[1][2]

In addition to her acting career, Park promotes philanthropy through her initiative, Starlight Angel Project.[3][4][5] She has been included in the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity 40 list in 2015, 2017, 2021 and 2022.[6][7][8][9]

Early life and education

Park Shin-hye was born on February 18, 1990, in Gwangju and grew up in Songpa District, Seoul. She has an older brother, Park Shin-won, a guitarist and composer.[10] In 2001 and 2003 respectively, Park made her first two appearances in the music videos for "Do You Love Me!" and "Flower" by singer Lee Seung-hwan.[note 1] She then underwent formal training in singing, dancing and acting under his supervision at Dream Factory.[13]

After completing her education at Youngpa Girls' High School, Park enrolled at Chung-Ang University, where she studied for eight years. In February 2016, she graduated with a degree in theater.[19][20] During the convocation ceremony, Park was honored with a service award for her achievements as a celebrity ambassador.[21]

Career

2003–2008: Career beginnings

Park became known when she played the younger version of Choi Ji-woo's character in the popular Korean drama Stairway to Heaven in 2003.[22] She also acted in supporting roles in several television series, most notably as a rebellious teenager in the 2004 drama special Very Merry Christmas.[23]

Park was cast in her first adult leading role in the South Korean-Japanese melodrama Tree of Heaven (2006), where her performance received critical acclaim.[24] The series was also aired in Japan, giving Park exposure abroad.[25]

Park made her film debut in the movie Evil Twin (2007), a horror film where she portrayed two roles: one as the main character, and the other as the ghost of the protagonist's sister.[26] She then played her first antagonist role in the romantic comedy series Prince Hours, a spin-off of Princess Hours (2006).[27][28] She appeared in the omnibus drama Several Questions That Make Us Happy [ko], released in May of the same year.[29] In the weekend drama Kimcheed Radish Cubes, which aired in August, she played the role of Jang Sa-ya, who grew up in a temple.[30] She cut her long hair for the role.[31]

Aside from acting, Park also hosted the variety program Fantastic Partner from 2006 to 2007,[32] where she collaborated with singer Yoon Gun to compose a song titled "I Think of You".[33] She was awarded Best Newcomer in a Variety Show at the MBC Entertainment Awards.[34]

2009–2012: Rising popularity

Park rose to fame after her portrayal as a cross-dressing heroine in the romance comedy music drama You're Beautiful (2009) alongside Jang Keun-suk.[35][36] Despite average ratings in South Korea, the series gained a cult following[37] and achieved high ratings in Japan.[38][39] She also contributed to the drama's original soundtrack with her songs "Lovely Day" and "Without Words".[40]

In 2010, Park starred in the low-budget romantic comedy film Cyrano Agency, which centered around a dating agency helping clients win over their love interests.[41] The sleeper hit proved to be both a critical and commercial success, attracting 2.7 million ticket sales nationwide and becoming the 8th best-selling film of the year.[42] Park won the "Most Popular Actress" award in film category at the Baeksang Arts Awards.[43] Park also voiced the main character of the animation film Green Days: Dinosaur and I, which premiered at the 15th Busan International Film Festival and received positive reviews.[44][45]

Park in 2012

Park then starred in MBC's youth melodrama Heartstrings (2011) opposite Jung Yong-hwa.[46][47] The combined successes of You're Beautiful and Heartstrings rose Park's popularity in Japan,[48] and in September 2011, she signed an exclusive contract with Japanese management agency IMX.[49] The same year, Park starred in her first Taiwanese drama, Hayate The Combat Butler, which was based on the Japanese shōnen manga of the same name.[50][51] In August 2011, she received the Popular Asian Star award at the LeTV Movie and Drama Awards.[52]

In 2012, Park was cast in the third season of KBS Drama Special, Don't Worry, I'm a Ghost, which aired on July 15.[53] Her performance in the drama won her the Best One-Act Special Actress Award at the 2012 KBS Drama Awards.[54]

Park was then cast in the third installment of tvN's "Flower Boy" series entitled My Cute Guys along with actor Yoon Shi-yoon, which premiered in January 2013.[55][56]

2013–2020: Breakthrough and mainstream success

In 2013, Park appeared in the comedy drama film Miracle in Cell No. 7,[57] which became one of the highest-grossing films in Korea.[58] She went on to win the Best Supporting Actress award at the 33rd Korean Association of Film Critics Awards.[59] To celebrate her 10th anniversary as an actress, Park held the "2013 Park Shin Hye Asia Tour: Kiss Of Angel" in four Asian countries, becoming the first actress to hold a tour spanning across Asia.[60][61] She then starred in actor and singer So Ji-sub's music video "Eraser" for his album Two'clock... Playground, co-starring with former child actor Yoo Seung-ho.[62]

The same year, Park co-starred with Lee Min-ho in The Heirs, a teen drama written by Kim Eun-sook.[63] The Heirs enjoyed immense popularity both locally, with a peak rating of 28.6%, and internationally, having over one billion cumulative views on the Chinese streaming website iQiyi.[64][65] Park experienced a surge in popularity domestically and internationally, and she became a Hallyu star.[66][67][68] She was given the "Popular Foreign Actress" award at the 2013 Anhui TV Drama Awards.[69]

In 2014, Park played the role of the Queen in the historical film The Royal Tailor.[70][71] The same year, Park starred in Pinocchio opposite actor Lee Jong-suk. She portrayed the female lead, a reporter who suffers from a fictional medical condition called the "Pinocchio complex" which causes her to suffer from uncontrollable hiccups when she lies.[72] Pinocchio became a hit,[73] earning an estimated US$5.62 million for broadcasting rights in just one year.[74] With The Heirs at the end of 2013 and Pinocchio in 2014,[75] she was included in Forbes Korea's Korea Power Celebrity 40 list, where she placed 33rd.[6] In the same year, MBC's Section TV Entertainment Relay dubbed her "Nation's Little Sister".[76] Park also received the Prime Minister's Commendation at the Korea Popular Culture Awards for her contribution to the Korean Wave.[77][78]

In 2016, Park made her small-screen comeback in SBS's medical drama Doctors, where she played a troubled teenager who later becomes a successful doctor.[79] The drama was a hit and topped viewership ratings and popularity charts during its 10-week broadcast.[80][81] She then appeared in the comedy film My Annoying Brother as a judo coach alongside actor Jo Jung-suk and Do Kyung-soo of Exo.[82][83] In the same year, Park was chosen as the Most Favored Korean Actress by fans of the Korean Wave in the United States.[84]

Park next starred in the crime thriller film Heart Blackened, a Korean remake of the Hong Kong film Silent Witness, which released in 2017.[85][86]

In 2018, Park became a cast member of the reality show Little Cabin in the Woods, produced by Na Young-seok, where she and fellow actor So Ji-sub documented their daily activities in a house located in Jeju Island.[87] The same year, she starred in tvN's fantasy suspense drama Memories of the Alhambra, playing double roles as a hostel owner and a guitar-player NPC.[88][89] The series was a commercial success and became one of the highest rated Korean dramas in cable television history.[90]

In 2020, Park starred in the disaster film #Alive alongside Yoo Ah-in, which was based on a script written by Hollywood screenwriter Matt Naylor.[91][92][93] The film was commercially successful, being the 7th highest grossing in South Korea for the year 2020.[94] The same year, she starred in the Lee Chung-hyun-directed thriller film The Call which tells the story of two women living in different time periods but are connected through a mysterious phone call.[95][96]

2022–present: Acting comeback

In November 2022, Park and Park Hyung-sik were reportedly cast as the main characters for the romantic-comedy medical drama Doctor Slump and this would be their reunion since working together in The Heirs (2013).[97] In March 2023, Park, Park Hyung-sik, Yoon Park and Kong Seong-ha [ko] were confirmed to play in the series.[98] The drama, by Baek Seon-woo [ko] and directed by Oh Hyun-jong [ko], revolves around the relationship between Nam Ha-neul (played by Park Shin-hye) and Yeo Jeong-woo (played by Park Hyung-sik), who were once high school rivals and later meet again as doctors facing slump. The story explores their journey from hate to love. It aired on JTBC from January 27, to March 17, 2024, every Saturday and Sunday at 22:30 (KST). It is also available for streaming on TVING in South Korea, and on Netflix in selected regions.

On December 29, 2023, Park Shin-hye and Kim Jae-young have confirmed their appearances in the SBS drama 'The Judge from Hell' (written by Jo Yi-soo, directed by Park Jin-pyo, produced by Studio S). It is scheduled to air in 2024. It is a romance fantasy about the coexistence of good and evil. Park Shin-hye (playing Kang Bit-na) a demon who enters the body of a judge, meets Kim Jae-young (playing Han Da-on) a more humane detective than anyone else, in a reality even more hellish than hell.[99]

Endorsements

Park's advertising career began after gaining recognition for her acting in the drama Tree of Heaven. In 2006, she signed an exclusive one-year model contract with KTF mobile communication service, Bigi.[106] In 2008, Park's adorable depiction of sneaking a glance at her crush (Jang Seo-jin) through donuts in a Happy Point Card commercial went viral.[107] In February 2009, Etude announced their exclusive model contract with Park, which was signed in January. She worked as a model for Etude, featuring alongside her You're Beautiful co-star, Jang Keun-suk.[108][109] Later, Etude paired her with Lee Min-ho.[110] In the same year, she was paired with Kim Hyun-joong for a commercial for Coca-Cola's carbonated beverage Dynamic Kin.[111]

In 2013, following the success of Miracle in Cell No. 7 and tvN's My Cute Guys, Park became more popular. Park, alongside Yoon Si-yoon, Kim Ji-hoon, and Go Kyung-pyo from My Cute Guys appeared in the Market O Valentine's Day commercial. such as clothing, cosmetics, automobile insurance, and beverages. She collaborated with brands like Sonobi,[112] Jambaengi,[113] Enprani Holika Holika,[114] The K Non-life Insurance Educar,[115] and Vegemil.[116]

After her hit drama Pinocchio, Park endorsed several international brands[117] like the Italian brand Bruno Magli and the French outdoor clothing brand Millet.[118][119] In 2014, Park was the first Korean star to be selected as a model for Visa.[120] Since the 2014 F/W season, Park served as the muse for the French jewelry brand Agatha Paris.[121] After the success of the drama The Doctors, it has been reported that brands like Bruno Magli experienced a surge in sales as a result of Park's endorsements.[122] In 2017, Park made history as the first Korean to serve as a global ambassador of Swarovski.[123][124] In the same year, Park was selected as the Korean muse for Coach[125] and Filipino clothing brand Bench.[126] In 2019, Park was chosen as first-ever brand ambassador for Korea by British jewelry brand Olivia Burton.[127] In 2021, Park was selected as the new model for the French original golf wear brand Castelbajac.[128] Park also served as an ambassador for local brands, including Mamonde which experienced increased sales due to her endorsements. Since 2019, she has been the muse for the clothing brand MOJO.S.PHINE.[129]

Philanthropy

Park Shin-hye has been engaged in church-organized volunteering activities since childhood. She actively participates in initiatives such as Habitat for Humanity's housebuilding projects and contributes to volunteer services with her family, including the "Babfor Sharing Movement"[note 2] as part of her birthday celebrations.[132][133] Throughout her career in the entertainment industry, Park has consistently engaged in charitable endeavors.[134][135]

In 2007, Park donated her talent for the omnibus drama Several Questions That Make Us Happy [ko]. The drama's proceeds, excluding production costs, were donated, including the fees of the writers, directors, and actors. The drama aimed to emphasize the significance of volunteering in a challenging social environment. It involved notable writers such as Noh Hee-kyung, Lee Sun-hee, and Seo Hee-jung, and was directed by Sung Joon-gi, with KBS producers Kim Yong-soo and Hong Seok-gu overseeing the project.[29]

In late 2009, Park travelled to Tapatali village in Nepal, for 6-days visit. During her stay, Park distributed pencils and notebooks to children who did not have access to school supplies. She also assisted in breaking and carrying stones for children working in the quarry. Additionally, she dressed up as Santa Claus and provided special Christmas gifts to the villagers. This volunteer experience was showcased in the KBS Love Request year-end special broadcast titled 'Home Winter Love'.[136][137]

In 2010, Park took part in CeCi magazine's "I Love Pet" campaign, along with 52 other celebrities, to commemorate the magazine's 16th anniversary. The campaign had two main objectives. First, it aimed to raise awareness about adopting abandoned dogs through organizations like 'Animal Freedom Solidarity'. Second, it aimed to provide support for service animals through the 'Animal-assisted Therapy Welfare Association', which helps disabled children by offering emotional therapy with the assistance of trained animals.[138]

In 2011, Park became a public relations ambassador for "Korea Food for the Hungry International" (KFHI).[note 3] As part of her role, she volunteered in Ghana for 8 nights and 9 days in May. During her time there, Park delivered food kits to impoverished children, assisted children with malaria treatment, and spent quality time with a sponsored child named Avanna, taking care of her and sharing meals together. This KFHI's campaign was showcased in the television documentary "2011 MBC World Food Day Special - Stop the Hunger Sharing Campaign."[139][140]

On February 18, 2012, Park celebrated her 23rd birthday with her fan club, Starlight Angel, through "Park Shin-hye Fan Meeting: City of Angel" in Seoul. A second fan meeting took place in Tokyo, Japan on the 24th, coinciding with the establishment of Park's official Japan fan club, "Twinkle." Proceeds from the Korean fan meeting, as well as a portion of the proceeds from the Japanese fan meeting, were donated through KFHI[note 3] to support the Starlight Angel Village in Ghana, Africa, where Park had previously volunteered.[141]

In the same year, Park and her former co-stars participated in charitable events following the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Through KFHI,[note 3] Park and Jung Yong-hwa donated a portion of the proceeds of their fan meet held on July 15 and 16 at the Tokyo International Forum Hall to celebrate the airing of their drama Heartstrings on Fuji TV Japan. The event was attended by approximately 10,000 fans. In August, Park, Jung Yong-hwa, and Lee Hong-ki met in Seoul with 80 Tōhoku victims from Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, who were students and staff of Ogatsu Middle School. They offered words of encouragement and gifts as part of a fundraising event called 'Hopes, Dreams, Happy Trip to Korea', organized by the non-profit organization 'Good Friends Save Children' (GFSC).[142][143]

In 2013, Park engaged in various charitable activities. She donated rice wreaths received from fans to a charity organization during the Flower Boy Next Door production presentation.[144] At the One Perfect Day movie showcase event in April, She donated 520 kg of rice wreaths received from fans, which provided meals for 4,300 undernourished children.[144] In June, Park also contributed her talents as a narrator to create an inclusive version of the movie for visually and hearing-impaired individuals.[145]

She celebrated her 10th-year career anniversary by holding "The 2013 Park Shin-hye Asia Tour: Kiss of Angel," in the Philippines, Japan, and China.[146][147] Her fan meeting on March 16th at the Star Theater in Pasay City, Manila, marked her first visit to the Philippines. The proceeds from the event were donated to the local community.[148] In Tokyo, Japan, she also had a fan meeting on the 24th. Following the event, she made donations to the Japan branch of KFHI. Additionally, she held fan meetings in Beijing and Shanghai, China in June.[149][150]

Proceeds from those events were also directed towards the Starlight Angel Village Project in Ghana, which Park initiated in collaboration with fans from both domestic and foreign countries. The project aimed to support various initiatives, including the construction of the first "Shin-hye's Center" in Ghana. This center comprises a school, library, and playground, providing free kindergarten education and meals for children. The project also involved the construction and repair of village wells, support for goats and pigs, distribution of malaria mosquito nets, and the implementation of prevention education. The "Shin-hye's Center" was successfully completed in November 2013, benefiting approximately 500 students.[151][152]

Wrapping up 2013, Park and her co-star Lee Min-ho from The Heirs participated in a charitable auction event organized by Cheil on December 12. Park donqted winter jackets and bags from The Heirs, while Lee donated three winter jackets. This event took place after the filming of the drama's final episode.[153] Shortly after, Park visited Angels' Haven orphanage on December 18, giving a lecture on intellectual property rights and donating shoes and clothing from authentic brands. She also served a free lunch and had a photo session with the children.[154]

After the Sewol Ferry tragedy, Park secretly donated ₩50 million to the victims' families. The press later discovered this, and on April 25, Her agency, S.A.L.T. Entertainment [ko], donated ₩10 million. Both donations were made through the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association.[155][156] Park also participated in the Yellow Ribbon Campaign for the Sewol Ferry tragedy.[157][158][159]

Shortly after, she embarked on "The 2014 Park Shin-hye World Tour: Story of Angel," starting with her appearance at the 2014 DramaFever Awards, followed by a fan meeting in New York on May 1st.[160] Her Asian tour began in Japan on July 19 and 20, with events held in Osaka and Tokyo featuring a live performance and a talk show.[161] Park visited five cities in China during her fan meeting tour, starting from Shanghai on July 26, followed by Chongqing, Shenzhen, Changsha, and Beijing.[162][163] On September 13, Park had her first fan meeting in Taiwan.[164] The tour continued with stops in Hong Kong and Manila, Philippines.[160] In October, She wrapped up her tour in Bangkok.[165][166] Park donated all proceeds from her fan meetings and photo albums with fans every year to the KFHI. She also supported after-school learning for children through Happy Home School, a local children's center run by KFHI.[167]

In March 2015, Park and S.A.L.T. Entertainment [ko] participated in the "Lovely Hands campaign" launched by Lotte Department Store. The campaign aimed to raise money for children with rare diseases at Korea University Anam Hospital. For each participant, Lotte Department Store donated ₩1,000. The campaign ran from March 27 to April 12.[168]

Also in March, she began "The 2015 Park Shin-hye Asia Tour: Dream of Angel," marking the third consecutive year of her fan meetings. Starting on March 27, Park hosted a three-day fan meeting at the IAPM center in Shanghai. She donated all her proceeds from the event to the KFHI's Starlight Angel Village project and a China animal protection organization called "Tasowon" (Other Whishes).[169][170] This was followed by her second exclusive fan meeting in Taiwan, which took place on the afternoon of August 16 at the Att Show Box.[171] In between the two events, In May, Park donated ₩30 million ($28,000) to support the victims of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake. Her management agency, S.A.L.T. Entertainment [ko], also donated ₩10 million. Both donations were made through KFHI.[note 3][172][173][174]

In 2016, Park began planning the second Shin-hye's Centre in Sampaloc, Manila, Philippines. Similar to the first center in Ghana, the Shin-hye's Centre aims to serve as a multi-purpose cultural space for the local community, with a specific focus on providing educational and nutritional support to children.[175][176] In March, Park, along with S.A.L.T. Entertainment [ko] employees, visited the planned site for the center's construction and formed personal connections with children at the existing Sampaloc Children's Center. During her visit, Park went to the homes of her sponsored children and participated in a fun activity of dyeing white T-shirts. She also extended an invitation to approximately 150 local children for a lunch gathering, where she served special meals. In July 2016, Park initiated the groundbreaking ceremony prior to the start of the center's construction. The completion of the centre was scheduled for October next year.[152][167][177]

On November 24, 2016, Park Shin-hye was honored as the 36th member of the Philanthropic Club of KFHI.[note 3] Following her, Lee Eun-young, CEO of S.A.L.T. Entertainment, was also honored. Membership in the club is granted to donors who have contributed a minimum of ₩100 million (US$85,000) or more to the organization.[178][179] Shortly after, following a devastating fire in District 4 of Seomun Market in Daegu on November 30, Park donated ₩50 million (US$42,881) to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association[note 4] for the victims.[180] Park also contributed ₩50 million to the association's Community Coal Bank, for briquettes of love, enabling the purchase of 83,340 briquete that provided warmth to 556 families for a month.[181]

Park kicked off "The 2017 Park Shin-hye Asia Tour: Flower of Angel," her fourth consecutive year of fan meetings, starting in Hong Kong on June 10th.[182] The tour subsequently made its way to Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines. The tour's proceeds were donated to KFHI through the "Starlight Angel Project."[183][184][185] In November 2017, Salt Entertainment, Park's agency, provided an update on the "Starlight Angel Project" through their official Instagram account. The construction of the "Philippine Shinhye Center," which began in July of the previous year, was completed in September 2017. In addition, the "Hwado Happy Home School Renovation Support Project" for a local children's center in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, started in May 2017, was also completed.[186][177]

Park was also involved in providing assistance to the victims of the 2017 Pohang earthquake. Through KFHI,[note 3] She donated ₩50 million in November.[187] Shortly after, on December 10, she arranged a special gathering in Seoul called "Park Shin-hye's Starlight Angel Project 2017: Kimchi Sharing of Love." Approximately 60 individuals participated in the event, including KFHI representatives and employees, as well as members of her fan club, 'Starlight Angel.' Together, they prepared kimchi and distributed it to approximately 200 families with children who had been impacted by the earthquake in Pohang.[188]

Alongside 10 other celebrities, Park joined the second season of "Star Relay Heart Challenge," a project aimed at providing education and emotional support for children from low-income families. On May 18, 2018, she interacted with fans a live broadcasts and completed special missions, such as creating cards for children. The donations to KFHI were based on the number of "hearts" received during the broadcasts, with a maximum of three million won ($2,775) being contributed.[189] On December 20, 2018, Park donated 20 washing machines, worth approximately ₩50 million, specifically designed for fire-retardant clothing as a gesture of appreciation for firefighters' hard work. LG Electronics pledged to match her donation by providing a dryer with each washing machine.[190][191][192]

In April of the following year, Park was honored with the Philanthropic Celebrity of the Year award at the 2019 Asia Philanthropy Awards.[193] During that same month, she donated ₩30 million to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association. The donation was specifically intended to aid the victims of forest fires in Goseong and Sokcho, Gangwon-do.[194] S.A.L.T. Entertainment [ko] announced on October 30 that Park's fan meeting, titled "The 2019 Park Shin-hye Fan Meeting: Voice of Angel," would take place on December 8 at Yes 24 Hall in Seoul. Park generously donated the profits from the fan meeting to the Starlight Angel Project.[195] Shortly after in November, Park made a contribution of ₩30 million for briquettes of love, to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association's Community Coal Bank.[196]

In late 2019, Park travelled to Botswana, home to 40% of Africa's elephants, for a 15-day visit. During her time there, she engaged in various activities with activists from the elephant protection group Elephants Without Borders,[note 5] including caring for orphaned elephants and attaching trackable GPS devices to wild elephants. Her experience was featured in the MBC documentary "Humanimal Part 1 - Killing an Elephant," which aired in January 2020. Park donated her entire appearance fee to the foundation.[199]

In March 2020, Park donated ₩50 million to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association's fund for preventing the spread of COVID-19.[200] In August 2020, she donated ₩100 million to support the victims of heavy rains and landslides through the same association.[201][202] In October of the same year, Park contributed approximately ₩50 million to the Starlight School program, a nighttime children's protection initiative by KFHI. The program is part of the Happy Home School movement, which works to provide safety and support for children against crime and adverse living conditions.[203] In December, Park, on behalf of the Starlight Angel Project, donated around ₩20 million ($18,100) through KFHI. The donation was used to provide 90,000 sanitary pads to 500 children from low-income families across 62 regional centers in South Korea, ensuring a 5-month supply.[204] Yuhan Kimberly, a brand represented by Park, also donated an additional 57,000 sanitary pads.[205]

In March 2022, Park donated ₩50 million to the Hope Bridge Disaster Relief Association to help those damaged by large forest fires in Uljin, Gyeongbuk and Samcheok, Gangwon.[206]

In July 2023, Park donated ₩100 million worth of 2,000 summer blankets to the flood victims affected by torrential rain. The blankets were distributed to the victims through The Korean Red Cross branches in Sejong, North Chungcheong, South Chungcheong, and Gyeongbuk regions.[207] To commemorate her 20th debut anniversary, Park held the "Memory of Angel" fan meeting on December 3, 2023, at Ilji Art Hall. She donated all the proceeds from ticket sales and merchandise to the Starlight Angel Project.[208]

Personal life

Park Shin-hye's family has been devout Christians for five generations.[132] Park is also famous for being a filial daughter. She used the money she earned over the course of 10 years, starting from her career as a child actress, to set up a barbecue restaurant for her parents.[134] Her older brother, Park Shin-won is a guitarist and composer.[209]

On March 7, 2018, it was confirmed that Park had been in a relationship with actor Choi Tae-joon since late 2017.[210][211][212] On November 23, 2021, it was announced that Park was pregnant and preparing for marriage with Choi.[213] They got married on January 22, 2022, in presence of friends and family in a church ceremony in Seoul.[214] She gave birth to their first child, a boy, on May 31, 2022.[215]
