ライブラリー・オブ・アメリカ

全米人文科学基金 および フォード財団の援助を受けて創設した1979年以来、印刷・製本と流通の経費に収益金ではなく寄付金を当てている。出版点数は 200 件超、発行部数は年平均25万冊超におよぶ。著者は幅広くマーク・トウェイン、フィリップ・ロス、ナサニエル・ホーソーンからソール・ベローまで、またアメリカ大統領の著述をふくむ^[1]。

発起人の文芸評論家エドマンド・ウィルソンが設立の構想を立てた^[2]。刊行物の第一号はその死後10年を経た1982年に出版^[2]。単行本のほか、2巻組 Reporting World War II^{[注 1]}あるいは版形が異なる Writing Los Angeles^[4]などを加わえてきた。

何世代にもわたって読み次がれることを考慮し、耐久性の高い製本技術が採られ、また版形は黄金率に統一。ページ数が1冊およそ 700 から 1600 ページあるため、米国国家規格協会の規格に照らしてページを楽に繰れる紙厚と本の厚みを抑える薄さを両立させた。用紙は無酸紙 (acid-free) で黄変を抑え、目に沿って使い糸綴じ (糸かがり製本) を施して、閉じたときに背がひび割れしたりふくらんだりすることを防いでいる。表紙は丈夫な木綿とレーヨンの混紡の布貼り、しおり（スピン）がつけてある。書体は読みやすさと目が疲れにくいことからセリフ書体 (英語版) のガイヤール (Galliard) である。

文学者で出版人の初代代表ダニエル・アロン (英語版) ^{[注 2][5]}ともに理事に歴史学者ロバート・ペン・ウォーレン、C・V・ウッドワード (英語版)^[6]、アメリカ文学者でピューリッツァー賞伝記作家^[7]の R・W・B・ルイス (英語版)^{[注 3]}、児童心理学者のロバート・コールズ (英語版)^[9]、社会主義者で評論家のアーヴィング・ハウ (英語版)^{[注 4]}およびユードラ・ウェルティを数える。また歴代の職員はオー・ヘンリー賞の受賞作を集めた雑誌編集長リチャード・ポイリャー (英語版)^[11]、ダブルデイ文庫部門創立責任者ジェイソン・エプスタイン (英語版) 等が中核となった^[2]。

法人代表は2009年現在^[update]、シェリル・ハーリー^[12]。出版代表はマックス・ルーディン (Max Rudin)^{[注 5]}、編集総括は詩人、翻訳家のジェフリー・オブライエン (英語版)^{[注 6]}である。

LOA の刊行物はおのおのの分野から選ばれた、信頼のおける研究者や専門家が校閲に当たり、既刊の書籍の省かれた箇所を調べて補完した完全版の発行を目指している。また、誤字脱字の校正に留まらず内容に注をつけ出典や著者の経歴を加えることもふくまれ、叢書の場合は歴史的な出来事を巻末にまとめてある。

一例として、リチャード・ライトが著わした Native Son (英語版) (邦題『アメリカの息子』) は1940年出版時に削除された原稿の箇所を復元、1991年に初の完全版として刊行した^{[注 7]}。あるいは アレクシ・ド・トクヴィル著『アメリカのデモクラシー』（仏: De la démocratie en Amérique)^{[注 8][注 9]}を取り上げ、アーサー・ゴールドハマー (英語版) に委嘱した新訳を出版している。

単体販売のほかに定期購読サービスを設け、利用者はカタログ記載のアメリカの文学 (小説、随想、詩歌) またはアメリカの歴史 (書簡、回顧録、伝記、系譜、演説原稿) の分野から選んで購入する。定期購読向けの書籍は上製で箱入り。表紙は単体販売の黒ではなく、その他の色の布貼りで、内容のあらすじを記した付録がついてくる^[16]。価格は1冊 (組) ずつ購入する場合よりも低い^{[注 10]}。
