สันตะสำนัก
สันตะสำนัก[7] (ละติน: Sancta Sedes, ภาษาละตินศาสนา: [ˈsaŋkta ˈsedes]; อิตาลี: Santa Sede [ˈsanta ˈsɛːde]) หรือ อาณาจักรอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์[8] (อังกฤษ: Holy See) คือสถาบันฝ่ายปกครองศาสนาในกำกับของมุขนายกแห่งกรุงโรม อันเป็นตำแหน่งประมุขของคริสตจักรโรมันคาทอลิกทั้งหมดด้วย สันตะสำนักเป็นที่ตั้งของรัฐบาลกลางของคริสตจักรโรมันคาทอลิก ฉะนั้นเมื่อกล่าวถึง “สันตะสำนัก” จึงหมายถึงองค์กรบริหารส่วนกลางของคริสตจักรโรมันคาทอลิกทั้งหมด[7] และเป็นอาณาจักรทางศาสนาที่เป็นที่ยอมรับตามกฎหมายนานาชาติว่าเป็นรัฐอิสระที่มีประมุขเป็นพระสันตะปาปาและสถาปนาความสัมพันธ์ทางทูตกับประเทศอื่นได้[9]

สันตะสำนักแบ่งการบริหารออกเป็น 4 ระดับ[7] ได้แก่
- สมณะกระทรวง (Congregation)
- สมณะทบวง (Pontifical Council)
- สำนักกรรมาธิการ (Pontifical Commission)
- สำนักงาน (Holy Office)
ทั้งนี้สันตะสำนักไม่ใช่นครรัฐวาติกันที่ก่อตั้งในปี ค.ศ. 1929 สันตะสำนักถือว่ามีมาตั้งแต่ศาสนาคริสต์ยุคแรก ตำแหน่งทูตจะไม่ใช่ตำแหน่งทูตแห่งนครรัฐวาติกัน แต่จะเป็นทูตแห่งสันตะสำนัก และผู้แทนของพระสันตะปาปาในรัฐหรือประเทศอื่นก็ถือว่าเป็นผู้แทนของสันตะสำนัก มิใช่ผู้แทนของนครรัฐวาติกันเรียกว่าเอกอัครสมณทูต
ขณะที่มุขมณฑลอื่น ๆ ในคริสตจักรต่างก็เป็นมุขมณฑลที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ แต่การเรียกอาณาจักรอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์โดยทั่วไปแล้วจะเป็นความหมายที่ใช้ในความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศและในความหมายของประมวลกฎหมายพระศาสนจักร[10] ที่หมายถึงรัฐบาลกลางของคริสตจักรโรมันคาทอลิกทั้งหมด
